Current trade KC-area native Cece Kizer to Houston Dash

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Current have traded a local product to the Houston Dash.

Blue Valley Northwest alum and midfielder/forward Cece Kizer has been traded to the Houston Dash for Canadian national forward Nichelle Prince. The Dash will also receive a 2024 international roster spot.

The Dash drafted Kizer in the second round of the 2019 NWSL Draft with the 13th overall pick.

The Ole Miss alum was traded from Racing Louisville back home to KC in 2022 and has been a crucial piece of the Current’s attack since she stepped in.

Kizer notched seven goals and an assist in 2022 and was second on the team with six goals and two assists this past season.

“We are incredibly grateful for the impact Cece has made on our club over the past two seasons,” Current general manager Camille Ashton said. “These decisions are always difficult, but we want to thank her and wish her the best going forward.”

Prince brings plenty of national team experience, playing for Canada’s Under 17 team since 2010 and then moving to the senior team in 2013. She’s been on two World Cup teams in 2019 and 2023 and helped Canada win a bronze in the 2016 Olympics and a gold in the 2020 Olympics.

“I am very happy to add Nichelle to this roster,” Current head coach Vlatko Andonovski said. “Bringing a player of her quality to the club continues to strengthen the team as the competition within the squad grows stronger.”

The 28-year-old has been with the Dash her whole professional career since she was drafted from Ohio State in the third round of the 2017 NWSL Draft.

She’s played in at least 16 games per season, with the exception of 2019 and 2023 when she was recovering from injuries. Prince has played all over the pitch and tallied 12 goals and 11 assists during her time in Houston.

Kizer was the last Kansas City-area native on the Current’s roster.

With her departure, the closest the Current have to a local product is 16-year-old St. Louis native Alex Pfeiffer. The teen was recently selected to represent the U.S. at the 2024 Concacaf Women’s U-17 Championship, set for Feb. 1-11 in Toluca, Mexico.
