Crowded backfield gives Muschamp options

The opening day starter from last season, A.J. Turner, is now surrounded by the experience and talent of Rico Dowdle and Ty'Son Williams.

Dowdle's success last season upon returning from a groin injury, coupled with the arrival of transfer Williams, has seemingly left Turner as the third option in this crowded backfield. When asked about this on media day, Turner was able to keep the focus on winning: "We all have the same goals, we want to win."

Despite the arrival of Dowdle and Williams, South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp highlighted the need to "get the ball in A.J.'s hands" following Saturday's scrimmage.

Muschamp noted that Turner "gives us a bit of a different style" and his speed could pay big dividends in an off the bench situation. Turner certainly gives the Gamecocks a different look offensively, but how big of a role will he play come September 2nd?

Last season, he compiled 497 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground. His game breaking ability in the return game set up the offense for early success in multiple games last season.

As camp has progressed, Turner appears to have his mindset focused solely on helping the team in any way possible.

"I'm not all about the hype or notoriety," Turner said. "At the end of the day I just want my team and my coaches to say I do things right and I'm an unselfish player."

Competition within position groups can either enhance or hinder on-field success and chemistry. With a team-first mentality permeating this competition, confidence in this stable of backs among Gamecock fans is well founded.

It's clear that Turner will play a role in the success of the Gamecocks this season. The redshirt sophomore can churn out the yards when needed, and offers a lot of experience for a player this early in his collegiate career.

He has the ability to be a starter in this league, as was evidenced last year. Caught between Williams and Dowdle, Turner's abilities are not negated. His skill set will be key in helping the Gamecocks reach their goals this season.

As we march closer to kickoff in Charlotte, you'll hear about the hard running speedster from Clifton, Virginia doing all he can to make the team better.
