Craig Counsell also interviewing for Cleveland Guardians manager gig
Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell is in Cleveland today interviewing for the open managerial position with the Cleveland Guardians, according to Cleveland.com.
It's the second managerial opening to which Counsell has been tied, along with the New York Mets opening. Counsell, 53, the longest-tenured manager in the National League who took over with the Brewers early in the 2015 season and won more games than any other skipper in franchise history, is not under contract for 2024.
The Guardians have been managed for 11 seasons by Terry Francona, also the winningest manager in franchise history, but he announced he was stepping down (he doesn't want to use the word "retire") after the 2023 season.
With Francona's departure, only one manager (Tampa Bay's Kevin Cash) in Major League Baseball was hired for his current spot before Counsell, and Cash was brought on board a mere five months earlier and made his debut in the same season as Counsell.
Francona reportedly made more than $4 million to manage Cleveland, which would rank among the highest salaries among managers in MLB. Counsell made $3.5 million last season.
