Cowboys News: Diggs and Biadasz injuries, Osa becomes workout warrior, Overshown on mend

Practice injuries on both sides of the ball have cast a shadow on what has been an almost picture-perfect start to a long NFL season for the Cowboys. While one of those starters has an opportunity to return to action, the other has been lost for the season.

This somber edition of News and Notes will take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions regarding the health of America’s Team. The Cowboys should get wide receiver Brandin Cooks back into the lineup after missing last week with a sprained knee. Lineman Tyler Smith and safety Donovan Wilson should make their season debuts in Arizona this weekend. Osa Odighizuwa is giving credit to his fast start on an off-season training regiment that had him working out four times a day. Future Hall of Famer Zack Martin once again worked with the training staff and missed another day of practice yet his status is listed as questionable. And despite the heartbreaking development on Diggs, a closer look at the roster reveals that this year’s Cowboys actually appear deep enough and talented enough to compensate for his absence.

Cornerback Trevon Diggs was lost for the season after suffering a torn ACL during Thursday’s practice while preparing for the team’s Week 3 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. Diggs signed a five-year extension worth $97 million this past offseason. Look for second-year corner DaRon Bland to step into the starting outside cornerback spot while veteran Jourdan Lewis should be the obvious choice to take over the slot duties for the team.

As crushing as Diggs’s injury is to the Cowboys, the team is actually fairly well-prepared when it comes to quality depth in the secondary. Stephon Gilmore’s acquisition now looks like sheer genius, with younger guys like Noah Igbinoghene, Eric Scott, Israel Mukuamu, and even Nahshon Wright poised to step up. Ultimately, it will require the entire defense to make up for No. 7’s absence.

Trevon Diggs wasn’t the only bad news the Cowboys received on the injury front. Starting center Tyler Biadasz was also added to the injury report after experiencing discomfort in his hamstring. Although he is still expected to undergo an MRI to determine the severity, the former Badger was a limited participant in practice and is listed as questionable against the Arizona Cardinals. Biadasz is coming off of a Pro Bowl year and is in the final year of his rookie deal. The Cowboys have yet to have all five of their projected starting O-linemen play a single snap together.

Cowboys defensive tackle Osa Odighizuwa has credited his breakout performance on the workout regiment he copied from Rams All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald. The extensive workouts Odighizuwa conducted had him walking around drenched with sweat for the majority of the offseason. Teammates took notice and are not surprised by what he has earned so far this season.

While the injury bug hit hard in Dallas, there is some positive news coming out of The Star in Frisco. Wideout Brandin Cooks practiced on a limited basis with expectations that he will return to the lineup after missing Week 2 against the New York Jets. He should be joined by starting lineman Tyler Smith, who is expected to make his season debut against the Cardinals. Safety Donovan Wilson, who injured his calf on the first day of training camp, is also expected to play after an extended absence.
