Corning's boys continue run of dominance in STAC track & field

Corning’s boys made it five successive Southern Tier Athletic Conference track & field championships Wednesday at Vestal’s Dick Hoover Stadium.

Somewhere between chilly and, in the late going, downright cold were conditions for the Hawks’ 12th conference championship in their last 13 opportunities.

Corning closed with 125.5 points to runner-up Ithaca’s 87, with third-place Norwich at 66.

The stadium lights went out before the girls and boys 1600-meter relays could be completed and meet officials opted to scratch the event, which was to be the last of the meet.

Individual standouts

The Hawks’ Gyasi Ruffin, two months back state public school champion at 600 meters, doubled in the 200 (23.09) and 400 (50.93).

Among the more impressive showings was turned in by Chenango Valley senior Tyler Norton, who made his way over a bar set at 6 feet, 6¾ inches for a decisive win in the high jump. And how about his teammate, Mack Patterson, topping the field with a 49-5½ put of the shot _ as an 8th-grader.

The host Golden Bears’ Liam Cody won a stirring 800-meter race, 1:58.31 to 1:58.47 by runner-up Finlay Oliver of Oneonta. Cody was coming off an eye-opening 4:19.5 mile Saturday in the Loucks Games at White Plains High.

Ithaca sophomore Noah Hilker got matters started on the boys’ side by going 9:57.22 for a comfortable margin of victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, the first event to finish.

Corning’s impressive showing began shortly after when Tevin McLaren, Anthony Mendoza, Ethan Ferrie and Marcus Homa teamed for an 8:33.8 that was good for a 10-second margin in the 3,200 relay.
