Cooper's Timothy Haynes leads Lubbock, South Plains baseball players to watch in 2024

PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Timothy Haynes, Sr., pitcher/first baseman, Lubbock-Cooper

Haynes, the A-J's 2023 player of the year, was the District 4-5A MVP. He posted a 12-1 record with a 1.46 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 77 innings. He hit .410 with a .485 OBP, tallying 43 hits, nine doubles, three home runs, 34 RBI and 25 runs.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Logan Addison, Sr., pitcher/third baseman, New Home

Addison, a Texas Tech signee, hit .421 with 16 doubles, seven triples, two home runs, 46 RBI and 57 runs. He also recorded 30 stolen bases. He was 8-1 on the mound with 67 strikeouts and a 2.48 ERA in 31 innings.

Brendon Bowman, Sr., catcher, Littlefield

Bowman hit .347 with a .474 OBP and 25 hits. He had three doubles, one triple, 26 RBI and seven runs.

Derek Cantu, Sr., second baseman, Idalou

Cantu was the district defensive MVP and hit .345 with 19 RBI and 25 runs. He recorded 30 hits, seven doubles, two triples and one home run.

Blaine Chancy, Sr., designated hitter, Frenship

Chancy hit .370 with a .449 OBP. He recorded 34 hits, seven doubles, three triples, 17 RBI and 16 runs.

Kade Franklin, So., pitcher/third baseman, Ropes

Franklin was the district newcomer of the year after going 5-0 with one save in 35⅔ innings. He recorded 47 strikeouts and 26 walks with a 2.55 ERA. He hit .383 with a .463 OBP, 36 hits, four doubles, one triple, 28 RBI and 27 runs.

Adolfo Garcia, Jr., first baseman, Olton

Garcia hit .365 with 35 hits, one double, 32 RBI, 27 runs and 18 stolen bases.

Tate Hendley, Sr., pitcher/first baseman, Idalou

Hendley, the district MVP, went 5-2 with three saves in 38⅔ innings. He notched 69 strikeouts and 21 walks with a 1.81 ERA. He batted .367 with four doubles, a triple, 22 RBI and 24 runs.

Hudson Hutcheson, Sr., catcher, Frenship

Hutcheson batted .368 with a .462 OBP. He recorded 43 hits, five doubles, one triple, one home run and 22 RBI.

Landon Hutcheson, Sr., outfielder, Frenship

Hutcheson hit .357 with a .438 OBP. He recorded 45 hits, 13 doubles, six triples, four home runs, 32 RBI and 44 runs.

Jackson Jolly, Sr., utility, Monterey

Jolly played all over, batting .352 with a .404 OBP. He recorded 35 hits, six doubles, one triple, one home run, 21 RBI and 17 runs. Jolly had a .969 fielding percentage with 113 putouts and 12 assists. He was 4-3 with one save, 42 strikeouts, 24 walks and a 3.00 ERA in 49 innings.

Cade Larson, Sr., pitcher/first baseman, Lubbock Christian

Larson went 10-3 with a 2.62 ERA and 92 strikeouts in 72 innings. He hit .465 with a .596 OBP, 15 RBI and 24 runs.

Xavier Lopez, Sr., catcher, Slaton

Lopez batted .402 with 37 hits. He recorded seven doubles, three triples, 21 RBI and 31 runs. He also had a .902 fielding percentage.

Mason Marmolejo, Jr., pitcher/shortstop, Ropes

Marmolejo was the district MVP, hitting .442 with a .566 OBP and .540 slugging percentage. He recorded 27 walks, 23 RBI and 57 runs. He was 7-3 with one save and a 2.45 ERA. Marmolejo had 80 strikeouts and 24 walks in 45⅔ innings.

Gilbert Martinez, Sr., utility, Estacado

Martinez hit .358 with a .443 OBP and .828 OPS. He had 28 hits, four doubles, two triples, 21 RBI and 18 runs.

Santana Martinez, Sr., catcher, Estacado

Martinez hit .419 with a .559 OBP and 1.19 OPS. He recorded 34 hits, six doubles, five triples, one home run, 28 RBI and 25 runs.

Seth Mayberry, So., outfielder, Plainview

Mayberry was the district co-newcomer of the year after hitting .386 with a .446 OBP. He had two doubles, four triples, 23 RBI and 27 runs.

Ian Mendez, Jr., utility, Littlefield

Mendez batted .359 with a .474 OBP. He recorded 26 hits, five doubles, one home run, 15 RBI and 19 runs.

Major McNeese, Jr., pitcher, Littlefield

McNeese notched 60 strikeouts and a 2.60 ERA in 59⅓ innings. He issued 16 walks and had a .237 batting average allowed.

Cole Montgomery, Sr., utility, Olton

Splitting time as shortstop and second baseman, Montgomery batted .347 with 33 hits, five doubles, one triple, 23 RBI, 30 runs and 16 stolen bases.

Ty Nuttall, Sr., pitcher, Snyder

Nuttall, the district pitcher of the year, went 7-3 with a 1.84 ERA. He recorded 48 strikeouts in 57 innings.

Jared Owens, Sr., pitcher, Coronado

Owens went 5-2 with one save in 36⅔ innings. He had 44 strikeouts, a 2.29 ERA and .973 fielding percentage. He hit .349 with 30 hits, two doubles, 15 RBI and 25 runs.

Holden Phillips, Jr., second baseman, Frenship

Phillips hit .337 with a .426 OBP and 29 hits. He recorded one double, two home runs, 12 RBI and 21 runs.

Miles Riley, Sr., pitcher, Denver City

Riley hit .455 with a .525 OBP and .545 slugging percentage. He totaled 30 hits, six doubles, 20 RBI and 10 stolen bases. Riley posted a 0.45 ERA during district play and a 3.90 ERA overall with 42 strikeouts and 14 walks.

Brooks Roberson, Sr., pitcher, Frenship

Roberson, a Louisiana Tech signee, was 6-3 with a 1.93 ERA in 54⅓ innings. He tallied 68 strikeouts and 24 walks.

Ja'Marcus Smith, Sr., pitcher, Monterey

Smith posted a 5-3 record with 50 strikeouts and 10 walks in 52⅔ innings. He had a 2.39 ERA and .901 fielding percentage with 18 assists and 64 putouts.

Easton Stewart, Sr., third baseman, Snyder

Stewart, the district MVP, hit .375 with a .500 OBP and .500 slugging percentage. He notched four doubles, two triples, 15 RBI and 21 runs.

Hayden Torres, Jr., pitcher, Ropes

Torres was 6-2 with one save and a 3.32 ERA in 46⅓ innings with 84 strikeouts and 44 walks.

Isaiah Vazquez, Jr., utility, Coronado

Vazquez went 5-2 with one save, 23 strikeouts and a 2.60 ERA in 37⅔ innings. He recorded 50 assists and 31 putouts. He also hit .337 with a .387 OBP, 32 hits, two doubles, 11 RBI and 17 runs.

Hector Villegas, Sr., pitcher, Monterey

Villegas was 5-2 with a 1.79 ERA over 47 innings. He notched 23 strikeouts and 30 walks.

Clayton Vincent, Jr., utility, Shallowater

Vincent played at second base and third base, hitting .402 with a .523 OBP and .984 OPS. He recorded 41 hits, three doubles, one home run, 24 RBI and 42 runs.

Ryder Watkins, Jr., first baseman, New Home

Watkins batted .457 with a .542 OBP and 1.12 OPS. He had 53 hits, six doubles, four triples, 38 RBI and 38 runs.
