The connection that brought Loren Landow to Notre Dame football? Former QB Brady Quinn

SOUTH BEND — Nearly five months after Matt Balis’ resignation on the eve of fall training camp, Notre Dame football has hired his permanent successor.

Loren Landow, a noted strength-and-conditioning expert with more than a quarter century of experience across a variety of sports, was announced Tuesday as Notre Dame’s director of football performance.

“Loren’s experience with individualization, better than anyone in the field, allows him to tailor training to each student-athlete to help him reach his full potential,” John Wagle, director of sports performance at Notre Dame, said in a statement. “The breadth of elite athletes with whom he has worked will help us open our perspective to provide new and innovative ways to support our student-athletes.”

A 1996 graduate of Northern Colorado with a degree in kinesiology, Landow spent five seasons (2018-22) with the NFL’s Denver Broncos as head strength-and-conditioning coach. Landow and the Broncos agreed to part ways in February, soon after the arrival of high-profile coach Sean Payton.

While Landow’s tenure with the Broncos was marked by frequent player injuries, his resume is filled with high-level connections and famous clients. He became director of sports performance at Steadman-Hawkins Clinic Denver in 2008, and the facility was renamed Landow Performance in 2016.

Former Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn, who worked with Landow during the 2011 NFL lockout, facilitated the connection between his alma mater and the veteran sports performance expert. Quinn told Denver’s 9NEWS he “immediately called Marcus Freeman and put (Landow) on their radar” after Balis stepped down.

Former U.S. Olympic gymnast and silver medalist Alicia Sacramone, Quinn’s wife, worked with Landow in her comeback from a torn Achilles tendon in 2011.

“Loren’s got the capabilities to oversee every single sport (at Notre Dame), which is huge,” Quinn told the station. “I think that’s one of the attractions to him: his work with so many different athletes and so many different realms. I do think they look at him as much more than football, but obviously football is what drives everything at Notre Dame.”

Landow has served as a consultant for U.S. national teams in women’s soccer, bobsled and swimming; the Texas Rangers and Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball; the NFL’s Carolina Panthers; the Washington Spirit of the National Women’s Soccer League; as well as college programs at Stanford, Colorado and Kansas.

Landow has worked with more than 70 NFL All-Pros and more than 25 first-round NFL draft picks in helping pro prospects prepare for the NFL Scouting Combine and Pro Day workouts.

Fred Hale Jr. filled the position on an interim basis this season after Balis, a high-energy presence since his arrival in early 2017, resigned for personal reasons.
