Concord women fall to Glenville State, 94-83 at Athens on Saturday
Jan. 30—ATHENS — The Concord University women's basketball team fell to Glenville State 94-83 in a Mountain East Conference game held at the Carter Center Saturday afternoon.
After falling into a quick hole to start the game, junior guard Skylar Davidson converted a three-point play to give Concord (9-8, 6-5 MEC) its first lead of the game, 11-10, with 3:46 remaining in the first quarter.
Graduate guard Jazz Blankenship, junior guard/forward Deja Atkinson, and graduate forward Alexis Phillips provided layups to keep Glenville State (14-4, 8-3 MEC) at bay and Concord led 19-18 at the end of the first quarter.
The Mountain Lions found themselves in a 33-29 hole with 5:50 to play until halftime. However, sophomore guard Kennedy Scales knocked down a pair of jump shots to even the score, 33-33, with 4:45 left on the clock.
After some back-and-forth, Glenville State took a 41-39 edge into halftime.
Atkinson and graduate guard Nakaila Gray scored quickly to open up the second half, tying the score once again, 45-45, with just under two minutes played.
Senior guard Jaisah Smith took a defensive rebound coast-to-coast as Concord regained the lead 49-47 with 7:39 left to play in the third quarter.
Following a Glenville scoring run over the next five minutes, the visitors opened up a 12-point lead. Jaisah Smith scored on a layup with under 10 seconds left in the frame and forced a Pioneers turnover with just under two seconds to play.
Freshman guard Ana Young knocked down a triple at the buzzer to cut GSU's lead to 69-62 heading into the fourth quarter.
Concord was never able to close the gap, never getting closer than seven points over the final 10 minutes of action, eventually falling to Glenville State by 11 points.
Jaisah Smith notched her fourth 20-point scoring outing this season, scoring 20 points on 8-of-17 shooting. Sophomore forward Abbie Smith picked up her eight double-double on the year, scoring 18 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.
Davidson added nine points and two assists, while Atkinson contributed seven points, three rebounds, and three assists. Scales netted a new career-high of seven points, scoring six in the second quarter.
From the field, the Mountain Lions shot a season-high 47.8 percent (33-for-69).
Concord will meet Fairmont State in the Carter Center Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. to round out the women's program's two-game MEC homestand in a doubleheader opener.
