Colts sign former 3rd-round QB, 2nd-round WR to practice squad

INDIANAPOLIS—The Colts have added a pair of recent second-day draft picks to the practice squad at positions of need.

Indianapolis is signing former Vikings and Browns quarterback Kellen Mond and former Bears wide receiver Anthony Miller to the practice squad, league sources confirmed to IndyStar on Tuesday night.

Mond likely landed a spot in Indianapolis because of the injury to starting quarterback Anthony Richardson.

Richardson is dealing with an AC joint injury, and although the Colts have not released a definitive timetable, the rookie is expected to “miss some time,” according to head coach Shane Steichen. Mond’s signing further underscores the reality that Richardson may be out for an extended period of time; Indianapolis already has backups Gardner Minshew and Sam Ehlinger on the 53-man roster.

Drafted in the third round out of Texas A&M by Minnesota in 2021, Mond played in one game as a rookie, completing 2 of 3 passes for 5 yards, but he was cut at the end of training camp in his second season and spent the rest of the 2022 season with the Cleveland Browns, who cut him at the end of training camp this year.

Miller, listed at 5-11, 199 pounds, was a starter in Chicago for three seasons after the Bears used a second-round pick to pluck him out of Memphis in 2018. A key part of the Chicago offense for his first three seasons in the NFL, Miller caught 33, 52 and 49 passes for the Bears from 2018-2020, hauling in 11 touchdowns in the process.

His time in Chicago ended when the Bears traded Miller to Houston the next summer, and since then, Miller hasn’t been able to find a permanent NFL home. Miller played in two games with Houston in 2021, then ended up playing another game in Pittsburgh, and suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in training camp with the Steelers in 2022.

Miller may have a chance to carve out a spot in Indianapolis.

The Colts do not have significant depth at outside wide receiver behind Michael Pittman Jr. and Alec Pierce; Indianapolis has mostly used Juwann Winfree in that role so far this season.
