Does anyone smell that? Smells like hope and good fortune. Chris Ballard was named Indy’s newest general manager and looks forward to working with Chuck Pagano in 2017.

Chris Ballard has served with the Bears’ and most recently the Chiefs. Ballard had a huge part on drafting Marcus Peters, Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. From those names alone you can tell that Ballard has a keen eye evaluating talented football players.

Ballard comes from a team that has built a well-established defense that has proven itself as one of the best units in football.

This defense isn’t going to turn into a top defense in just one offseason and it’s not going to be the best, but you can bet on some major upgrades coming soon.

It all starts with the draft and looking where the Colts can go. They can attack the running back position or go straight to the defense and try to find a gem at running back later in the draft. Or they can go at any position on defense because we need it.

Other than the draft Ballard and the Colts are rolling into free agency with some deep pockets. According to Bleacher Report the Colts are projected to have about $58 million in salary cap space. The Colts can make more space by letting go some of the aging players on the defense as well.

Some free agents include A.J. Bouye, Malcolm Butler and Trumaine Johnson at the cornerback position. Along with a good free agent class there is a lot of youth which could mean a long term solution at some of the positions that need to be filled.

I think I speak for a lot of Colts fans that I am excited for free agency and the draft.
Side note go Falcons.
