Colorado State football player Kobe Johnson will not play the rest of the season.

He missed Saturday's win over Boise State and CSU coach Jay Norvell said Monday the running back is now out but plans to return next season.

"We're going to redshirt Kobe. Kobe's not going to play the rest of the year. He's got a pretty significant wrist injury, and we want to give him the best chance to play a full season, so he will not return," Norvell said in his weekly press conference.

It's significant news for CSU. Johnson and Avery Morrow were considered co-No. 1's to begin the season. Both were injured in Game 3 vs. Middle Tennessee. Johnson returned to face Utah Tech but could not play against Boise State.

Johnson has 128 rush yards and a 98-yard kick return touchdown this season for CSU. He's a fifth-year player after spending four seasons at North Dakota State, where he ran for more than 2,500 yards. He has not redshirted, so he can do so this season (since he has played fewer than four games) and return in 2024.

Norvell did say the Rams "hope to get Avery back this week." Morrow has missed the last two games after being injured against Middle Tennessee.

Walk-on Vann Schield has been the lead back during the wave of injuries and he has a rushing touchdown in each of the last three games.

"Vann Schield has really done a great job stepping up in their absence. We may not rush for 200 yards a game, but we do have some very important rushes," Norvell said.
