College Weekly: Siena Heights football wins third straight, Adrian falls to Albion

Adrian College football hit the field for the first time without head coach Jim Deere leading the way for the first time since 2009 after he resigned last week during his 14th season.

Siena Heights returned home as well coming off a big win against No. 12 Concordia last week.

The Saints picked up a third-straight win as they beat the Blue Devils, 31-10, to improve to 5-3 and 3-2 in the Mid-States Mideast League.

SHU raced ahead to a 28-7 lead and was up 28-10 at the half on touchdown passes from Elijah Taylor to Credell Prather (24 and 35 yards) and Eric Williams II (54) while Ethan LoPresto added a 3-yard touchdown run. David Medvedik kicked a 30-yard field goal in the second half.

LoPresto finished 128 yards rushing while Taylor was 12-of-19 passing for 184 yards and three touchdowns but also threw two picks. Williams had four receptions for 73 yards while Prather had three for 65.

Cayden Hankins had nine tackles while Antonio Simley had seven with three sacks, Shamar Askin had six with an interception and Amir Stewart had a pick as well.

With the win, the Saints won the MSFA Michigan traveling trophy, which is played for between SHU, Lawrence Tech and Concordia.

The Bulldogs dropped their fifth straight as they lost to MIAA rival, Albion, 34-21. Adrian (1-7, 0-4 MIAA) trailed 21-0 at the half but got within a score twice in the second half.

Mark Lopez completed 20-of-40 passes for 327 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Cole Seslar caught four for 113 yards while Keontae Townsend caught five for 66 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown and Alyjuuan caught seven for 65 yards and an 18-yard touchdown.

Tyler Poirier moved from tight end to running back and rushed for 93 yards and a 1-yard touchdown.

Here's how the rest of the week played out for Adrian and SHU:

ADRIAN

Women's Hockey

UTICA, N.Y. — No. 6 Adrian began the season with an exciting win against No. 12 Elmira in overtime, 3-2.

The Bulldogs got goals from Mya Roy and Courtney Ben in regulation while Une Bjelland scored the game-winner at the 4:36 mark in overtime. Bjelland, Jocelin Hudanish, Roy and Callie Wollschlager all had assists.

Annie Gilbert made 27 saves.

The Bulldogs fell to No. 13 Utica in overtime again on Saturday, 2-1. Hudanish scored the equalizer in the third period while Michaela O'Brien made 13 saves as Adrian outshot Utica on goal, 45-15.

Men's Hockey

UTICA, N.Y. — The No. 2 Bulldogs and No. 6 Utica played to a 0-0 draw to open the season on Friday.

Dershahn Stewart made 41 saves in the shutout.

The men dropped Game 2 in Utica, 3-2, in overtime. Stewart made 32 saves in net while Riley Murphy and Connor May had goals and Ryan Pitoscia, Jaden Shields, Theo Thrun and Mathew Rehding had assists.

Women's Soccer

The Bulldogs wrapped up the regular season with a 5-2 win at home against Alma.

Adrian (8-5-3, 4-3-1) got two goals from Annamarie Fossmoen and one from Rylea Mougrabi, Teagan Bergeron and Kaitlyn Dake each. Kelsey Zoli, Josie Huber and Ellise Fries each had an assist.

The Bulldogs fell to Albion in the MIAA quarterfinal on Saturday, 2-1. Leah Homan scored the lone goal.

Volleyball

The Bulldogs hosted one of the top teams in the nation on Tuesday, Calvin, and fell 25-14, 25-22, 25-13.

Amber Morris had six kills and four digs, Hailey Farrell had 20 assists and eight digs and Mya Minjares had 14 digs.

Adrian is 11-10 overall and 4-2 in the MIAA.

Cross Country

The Bulldogs competed at the MIAA championships where the men took sixth and the women finished eighth.

Calvin won the men's title while Adrian's top runner was Will Houvener in 16th (25:24). Hope won the women's title with the Bulldogs' top runner being Emme Koutz in 13th (22:19.9).

Men's Soccer

The Bulldogs finished the season with a 2-0 loss at home to Trine. Adrian went 1-13-2 on the season and 0-7 in the MIAA.

SIENA HEIGHTS

Women's Soccer

The Saints remained undefeated as they beat Michigan Dearborn Wednesday, 5-0, at home and completed the unbeaten run and won the WHAC regular season title with a 2-1 win Saturday at Cleary.

Parker Cheney and Gia Diaz each had a goal and an assist while Keirra Thompson, Rylie Henckel and Sophie Zelek all scored a goal. Alyssa Fischer and Lily Tiplady had assists as well.

Caitlyn Harwood was unchallenged in net for the shutout.

Cheney and Tiplady scored the goals at Cleary while Harwood made three saves.

SHU is 13-0-5 on the season and 9-0-2 in the WHAC and tied with Aquinas.

Volleyball

The Saints bounced back from a loss in Set 1 to beat Northwestern Ohio in WHAC play, 22-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-16, on the road.

Taylor Wegner had 16 kills, eight digs and a block while Aubrey Bates had 33 assists, 18 digs, six kills and two aces and Payton Osborne had 20 digs.

SHU then swept Lourdes at home Saturday, 25-11, 25-20, 25-12.

Cailynn Sullivan and Kinsey Wagner (Onsted) each had eight kills to lead the Saints while Bates had 24 assists and Osborne had 16 digs.

SHU is 21-7 overall and 13-5 in the WHAC.

Men's Soccer

The Saints' winless skid in October continued Wednesday with their second tie of the month against Michigan Dearborn, 1-1, in WHAC play.

Abdallah Zaid had the goal for SHU.

The Saints ended the skid in the regular season finale as they beat Cleary, 2-1.

SHU, which finishes 7-8-3 on the season and 3-5-3 in the WHAC, got goals from Gaizka Zandio and Lewis Crombie with Nolan Chaput and Matheus Marrote chipping in with assists and Ricardo Moreno making four saves.
