COLLEGE WEEKLY: Adrian, Siena Heights football both fall

Both the Adrian College and Siena Heights football teams fell on Saturday with the Bulldogs losing 34-17 to Defiance College in the home opener while the Saints lost 38-10 at Roosevelt in their season opener.

Adrian (0-2) gave up an onside kick to star the game, but responded with an AJ Pipkins interception, which setup a connection from freshman Brady Raymond to Ben Coloske on a deep ball and then an 8-yard touchdown pass.

The two combined again to end the first half to send the Bulldogs into the half up 17-14, but the second half belonged to the Yellow Jackets.

Raymond finished 6-of-15 passing for 110 yards, two touchdowns and a pick while rushing for 32 yards, but was knocked out of the game in the late in the second half. Coloske caught four passes for 80 yards and two scores.

Ryker Bidwell made 17 tackles.

The Saints (0-1) struck first in their game as well on the road with Ethan LaPresto (Reading) rushing in for a 5-yard score, but Roosevelt would score the next three touchdowns before SHU kicked a 32-yard field goal by David Medvedik to make it 21-10 at the half.

Hayden Lehmann and Elijah Taylor struggled behind center as the duo combined to go 13-of-38 passing for 130 yards and five interceptions.

LoPresto had 43 yards rushing while Bobby Opalewski caught seven passes for 69 yards.

Jack Fitzgerald had six tackles while Joseph Wharton had five with a sack, 2.5 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles.

ADRIAN

Women's Soccer

The Bulldogs netted their first win under first-year head coach Nathan Kronewetter as they peppered the Defiance keeper with shots and won 10-0 before playing Baldwin Wallace to a 0-0 draw on Saturday.

The scoring flurry was the most in program history for a single game, breaking the previous record of nine set twice, once in 2017 and again in 2019 against St. Mary's and North Park.

Annamarie Fosmoen and Leah Homan each had hat tricks while Rylea Mougrabi scored twice with an assist. Bri Aikens and Kelsey Zoli had the other two goals.

Adrian played three different goalies, but none were challenged as the Bulldogs outshot Defiance, 50-1, and 28-0 on goal.

Volleyball

Adrian traveled to DePauw, Indiana for the MIAA/NCAC crossover where the Bulldogs went 1-2.

Adrian beat Hiram (25-23, 25-18, 16-25, 25-20) and fell to Rose Hulman (23-25, 25-17, 19-25, 25-21, 15-5) on Friday before losing to DePauw on Saturday (25-17, 25-23, 25-21).

Amber Morris had another strong weekend of play with 43 kills, 32 digs, six blocks and three digs. Hailey Ferrell had 90 assists, 37 digs, five aces, two blocks and two kills and Mya Minjares had 59 digs and 10 assists.

Men's Soccer

The Bulldogs opened the season Wednesday with a shutout, but were also shutout themselves as they tied Earlham, 0-0 and then lost 2-1 to Anderson.

Adrian outshot Earlham, 14-10, 8-4 on goal.

Jackson Vacca had the shutout.

The Bulldogs then got shutout on Friday against Manchester, 5-0.

Dalton Grubbs had the lone goal.

Golf

The men's golf team took the Ken Venturi Invite hosted by Trine on Wednesday and finished seventh with a team round of 301 to tie with Cleary.

Calvin won the meet with a round of 279.

Hendrik DeKoning led the Bulldogs as he took 19th with a round of 73.

The women's team took part in the two-day Kyle Campbell Memorial hosted by Olivet at The Medalist in Marshall.

Adrian shot a three-round total of 638, taking second by two strokes against Bethel.

Lauren Reed shot a 155 to take third while Riley Kleck shot a 159 to tie for seventh and Olivia Ohmer shot a 160 to tie for 11th.

Tennis

The Bulldogs hosted Huntington with the men's team falling 7-2 while the women lost 6-3 before taking on Aquinas on Saturday where the men won 5-4 while the women won 8-1.

Claire Earley won a pair at No. 1 singles (6-0, 0-6, 10-3 and 6-3, 4-6, 6-10) while Brooke Posey won at No. 6 singles (6-2, 6-2 and withdraw) and Jocelyn Smith and Maddison Wagner won at No. 3 doubles (8-6) against Huntington before Smith and Reagan Snyder won at No. 3 doubles against Aquinas (withdraw).

Sean Ruhf won a pair of singles matches at No. 6 flight and was joined by Jackson Wilcox to win at No. 3 doubles against Aquinas, 8-4.

SIENA HEIGHTS

Men's Soccer

After a scoring outburst on Monday, the Saints only needed one goal to beat Albion on Wednesday, 1-0.

Gaizka Zandio's goal in the 60th minute was all SHU needed as Ricardo Moreno only needed two saves for the shutout.

Volleyball

The Saints had their five-match win streak snapped Wednesday at Michigan Dearborn as they opened Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play with a 25-23, 16-25, 25-23, 25-23 loss.

Setter Aubrey Bates had a strong match with 44 assists, 17 digs, three kills, two aces and a block. Taylor Wegener had 19 kills and 14 digs and Olivia Norman had 11 kills.

Women's Soccer

The Saints traveled to Indiana Kokomo and played to a 0-0 draw.

SHU (3-0-2) had seven shots on goal while Caitlyn Howard only needed one save for the shutout.

Golf

The women took on the Lourdes Invite on Thursday, finishing 12 shots behind winner Lawrence Tech, despite the Saints being without Bethany Nowak of Tecumseh.

Skylar Whitman stepped up, shooting a 77, two shots behind the medalist, while Leah LaFluer carded an 81 to tie for sixth, Megan Paczas shot an 82 to tie for eighth and Brooke Strand shot a 97.

The men had their shot at the Lourdes Invite on Tuesday where the Saints took third, four strokes behind Cleary and Lawrence Tech, with a round of 300.

Jake Gross led SHU as he tied for third overall with a 72 while Ben Ellis shot a 73 to tie for ninth.

Cross Country

Siena Heights took to Indiana Wesleyan for the Twilight Invite where the women took 11th and the men placed 14th.

The Saints women had a team score 295 while Taylor won with a score of 20. Isabelle Uganski led SHU with a time of 24:48.30 to take 39th.

The men had a score of 388 with Wesleyan winning with a score of 18. Andrew Stern took 25th (25:50.60).
