COLLEGE SPORTS ROUNDUP: Texas Tech’s Adrian Frye gets minicamp invitation from New Orleans Saints

Texas Tech football player Adrian Frye was a regular in the Red Raiders' defensive backfield for five years. Now Frye will try to make it in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints. The Saints extended Frye a rookie minicamp invitation, Tech announced Monday.

Frye signed with Texas Tech in 2017 as a Texas top-100 recruit out of Aldine Eisenhower in suburban Houston. He burst onto the scene as a redshirt freshman in 2018, earning second-team midseason All-America honors from The Associated Press after six games. At the end of the year, he got first-team All-Big 12 recognition from conference coaches and from The AP and freshman all-America honors from the Football Writers Association of America.

Frye had Big 12-leading totals of five interceptions and 13 pass breakups that season playing cornerback. He never again approached those numbers, however, and though he remained in the rotation, he wasn't a regular starter in any of the past three seasons.

Along with Frye, running back SaRodorick Thompson (New Orleans Saints), kicker Trey Wolff (Tennessee Titans) and defensive back Marquis Waters (New York Jets) also signed as undrafted free agents. Defensive lineman Tyree Wilson was selected by the Las Vegas Raiders with the seventh pick of the NFL Draft last Thursday.

Texas Tech track and field

On the first day of May, the Texas Tech men’s track and field team followed suit as it was ranked Monday the No. 1 team in the country. The women’s squad moved up nine spots to No. 13.

The Red Raiders leaped one spot to take the top spot after concluding their regular season last weekend by hosting the Corky/Crofoot Shootout.

During the final regular season meet last weekend, Courtney Lindsey set a personal best in the 200, clocking in at 19.94 seconds, Omamuyovwi Erhire debuted in the triple jump with a mark of 53-feet, 8 1/2 inches — making him one of two Division I jumpers inside the top-25 in both the triple and high jump (7-0.5).

Texas Tech has an off week before competing in the Big 12 Outdoor Championships set for May 12-14 in Norman, Oklahoma.

Texas Tech baseball

After dropping the Sunday contest, and a Big 12 Conference road series to Kansas State last weekend, the Red Raiders were ranked No. 15 by Baseball America, No. 24 by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and No. 24 by USA Today.

Last week, Texas Tech was ranked by six national polls that also included Perfect Game (No. 13), D1Baseball (No. 14) and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper (No. 22). Baseball America dropped the Red Raiders five spots, while NCBWA and USA Today also placed Tech nine spots lower following the series loss.

The Red Raiders (30-15) are scheduled to host Sam Houston State (27-18) for a three-game home series, starting with a 6:30 p.m Friday game at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park. The series continues with a 2 p.m. Saturday contest and the finale slated for 1 p.m. Sunday. All games will be streamed online on ESPN+.

SHSU is scheduled to take on UTSA in a 6 p.m. Tuesday road game before facing off against Tech.

LCU basketball

Former Texas Tech guard Ethan Duncan announced Monday he's committed to Lubbock Christian University, where he'll play for his father, Chaparrals coach Todd Duncan.

Ethan Duncan averaged 27 points and 7.0 assists per game his senior year at Trinity Christian and earned all-state recognition for the fourth year in a row from the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools. He redshirted at Texas Tech in the 2021-22 season, then had his name entered into the NCAA transfer portal before last season.

Wayland Baptist baseball

Wayland Baptist is seeded sixth and will take on fourth-seeded Mid-America Chritian at 2:30 p.m. Friday in the opening round of the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament.

The eight-team, double-elimination tournament will take place Friday through Monday at both Oklahoma City University and University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma in Chickasha. The Pioneers will play their games at USAO.

Wayland claimed the No. 6 seed after winning two of three games last weekend against Southwestern Christian to end the regular season. The Pioneers finished league play with a 12-12 record and take a 27-20 mark into the SAC Tournament.

MACU sports a 35-14 overall record, including 15-9 in SAC play.

The Pioneers took two of three from the Evangels when they met at Wilder Field April 7 and 8, dropping the opener, 13-7 in nine innings before winning the next two, 2-0 and 15-6.

The WBU-MACU winner advances to play either No. 2 seed USAO or seventh-seeded SCU at noon Saturday. The winner of that games advances to the bracket final at 1 p.m. Sunday.

If the Pioneers lose to MACU, they would play the USAO-SCU loser at 6 p.m. Friday in an elimination game.
