College roundup: St. Lawrence men, women bow out in opening round of league soccer tourney

Oct. 31—CANTON — Brady Van Epps scored eight minutes into the game as fifth-seeded Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute defeated fourth-seeded St. Lawrence University 1-0 in the first round of the Liberty League men's soccer tournament Tuesday.

Julio Rodriguez received the assist on Van Epps' goal, which found the bottom right corner of the net.

St. Lawrence sent 21 shots toward the RPI goal, including 16 in the first half. Engineers goalkeeper Colin Such made seven saves in the shutout as RPI (9-6-2) moved on to the semifinals against top-seeded Hobart.

Ben Woelfinger made three saves for the Saints, who were attempting their third straight league title. SLU finished its season 7-6-4.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

ITHACA 2, ST. LAWRENCE 0

Ithaca College broke through in the second half with a pair of goals to advance over St. Lawrence in the opening round of the Liberty League playoffs in Ithaca.

Allie McCabe and Ella Shorkey each scored for the Bombers (10-2-4), who advanced to Friday's semifinal against No. 2 Rochester Institute of Technology.

Ithaca outshot St. Lawrence 24-4. The Saints (7-7-4), making their first postseason appearance since 2019, received four saves from Keely Snode. Grace Hickey stopped two shots for the Bombers.

MEN'S HOCKEY

SUNY POTSDAM 4, SUNY CANTON 1

SUNY Potsdam received scoring from four players as it rallied from a first-period deficit to defeat host SUNY Canton for its first victory of the season.

The Bears (1-1) allowed a goal to the Kangaroos' Brendan Morrow 13 minutes, 22 seconds into the game but tied it 1-1 on Jack McCandless' unassisted goal 2:22 into the second period.

Potsdam then scored three times in the third period on goals by Jeremy Quesnel, Michael Campbell and Max Klanow. Eli Doughart-Wood assisted on two goals.

John Werber made 30 saves in goal for the Bears. Nate Hopkins also made 30 saves for the Roos (0-3).

VOLLEYBALL

SUNY PLATTSBURGH 3, ST. LAWRENCE 0

Jeanette Ashong produced 10 kills and four blocks as SUNY Plattsburgh defeated St. Lawrence 25-17, 25-22, 25-11 in nonleague match at Plattsburgh.

Katarina Wagner added six kills and six blocks for the Cardinals (12-10). Maggie Lyon contributed seven kills and nine digs.

Vivian Zymeck finished with 10 kills and Araiza Acum-Santos followed with eight for St. Lawrence (4-19) in its final road match of the season. Vanessa Latam provided 17 assists.
