College roundup: Martino's two goals give Clarkson men's hockey weekend sweep on road

Nov. 18—NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Ayrton Martino scored a goal each in the first and second quarters and the defense finished off the 2-1 ECAC Hockey League men's victory Saturday against Yale at Ingalls Rink.

Martino scored his third goal of the season with 2 minutes, 32 seconds remaining in the first period with George Grannis and Trey Taylor recording assists.

Martino followed with a goal 2:04 into the second after knocking the puck out of the air on a shot by Eric Ciccolini and into the net.

Briggs Gammill cut Clarkson's lead in half with a goal 8:33 into the third period. Yale (2-5, 2-25) pulled its goalie with 20 seconds left and a faceoff in their offensive zone but Clarkson's Mathieu Gosselin won the draw and the Golden Knights cleared the puck to clinch a weekend road sweep.

Austin Roden made 16 saves for Clarkson (6-5, 3-1), which outshot Yale 27-17.

BROWN 2, ST. LAWRENCE 1

St. Lawrence gave up a power-play goal to Ryan St. Louis within the first three minutes of the game and dropped its second straight ECACHL road game with a loss at Meehan Auditorium in Providence, R.I.

Wyatt Schlaht scored another first-period goal with seven seconds left for a 2-0 lead for the Bears (3-5, 2-5).

Tyler Cristall scored on a power play in the third period at 8:29, redirecting a shot from teammate Mason Waite.

Ben Kraws made 25 saves for SLU (3-8-1, 1-3). Lawton Zacher stopped 30 of 31 shots for Brown.

HAMILTON 5, SUNY CANTON 4 (OT)

William Neault scored 1:07 into overtime to give Hamilton College the victory over SUNY Canton in a back-and-forth game in Clinton.

SUNY Canton (0-7) rallied from a 2-0 deficit with three straight goals before Hamilton tied it 3-3. The Kangaroos took a 4-3 lead but Hamilton's Luke Tchor scored his second goal of the game with 42 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

James Philpott also scored twice for the Continentals (2-0).

Nico Schoner scored twice for the Roos. Jack Seamans and Nic Herringer also provided goals for Canton.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY

ST. LAWRENCE 4, BROWN 0

Senior Julia Gosling registered her 100th career point while assisting on three goals as St. Lawrence blanked Brown at Appleton Arena.

Kennedy Emerson and Sarah Marchand each scored first-period goals and Taylor Lum assisted on each of them as the No. 7 Saints finished off an ECACHL weekend sweep at home.

Lum also scored a goal and Marchand finished off a two-goal, one-assist game with an empty-net shot in the third for SLU (12-3, 6-0). Emma-Sofie Nordstrom stopped 25 shots in the shutout against Brown (5-6-1, 4-5-1).

CLARKSON 1, YALE 0

Darcie Lappan delivered the only goal of the game in the first period and Michelle Pasiechnyk recorded her fifth shutout as Clarkson remained unbeaten with an ECACHL victory over Yale at Cheel Arena in Potsdam.

Lappan scored off assists from Sena Catterall and Jenna Goodwin with 3:07 left in the first period.

No. 11 Yale appeared to score the tying goal 5:57 into the second period but after an official review, the Bulldogs were ruled offsides.

Pasiechnyk finished with 22 saves for the fifth-ranked Golden Knights (14-0-2, 5-0-1). Pia Dukaric made 15 saves for Yale (5-5, 5-5).

SUNY CORTLAND 6, SUNY POTSDAM 3

Sisters Jillian and Mia Hlasnick each scored two goals in SUNY Cortland's five-goal second period as the Red Dragons broke out of a scoreless game to defeat the Bears in a SUNYAC game in Cortland.

Jillian Hlasnick also assisted on the other second-period goal by Meggan Cramer and a third-period goal by McKenzie Brown for Cortland (7-0-1, 4-0-1). Molly Goergen made 17 saves for the Red Dragons.

Potsdam (2-3, 1-3) scored all three goals in the third period on shots by Meghan Teachout, Rebecca Holmes and Kaylee Merrill. Merrill's goal was the 61st of his career, tying Potsdam graduate Jordan Ott for the program's career goals-scored record.

SUNY CANTON 6, ANNA MARIA COLLEGE 0

Desiree Snook scored a pair of goals in the first period as SUNY Canton recorded its second straight 6-0 victory over Anna Maria College in a nonleague game in Canton.

Ashten Morris added a goal and an assist and Abby Tate, Jayme McIllveen and Danika Lalonde also scored for the Kangaroos (5-3). Claire Noftell stopped 13 shots in the shutout over the Amcats (3-4-2).

CROSS COUNTRY

CANTON'S LYNDAKER ALL-AMERICAN

Canton's Nick Lyndaker, one of two St. Lawrence University runners competing in the NCAA Division III men's championships, finished 32nd and gained All-American honors in Newville, Pa.

Lyndaker, a sophomore, finished in 25:03.8, bettering his previous time on the Big Spring High School cross country course by more than 30 seconds when he ran there at an NCAA pre-nationals meet.

Lyndaker is the first SLU men's All-American since 2019.

SLU senior Michael Skutt placed 141st in the race (25:57.5), which was won by Wisconsin-La Crosse's Ethan Gregg in 24:02.4.

SIBOLD NAMED ALL-AMERICAN

St. Lawrence University senior Alli Sibold finished 20th in the NCAA Division III women's championships in Newville, Pa., claiming All-American honors for a Saints women's runner for the first time since 2014.

Sibold cleared the course in 21:27.5, which was just short of her personal best. St. Lawrence finished 26th overall as a team.

Saints freshman Hannah Bennett followed Sibold in 118th place in 22:40.5. Classmate Adriana Cecchetelli finished 225th in 23:16.4 with junior Emma Palumbo 227th (23:18.0).

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

SUNY CANTON 73, ALFRED STATE 43

Natalie Bartle and SUNY Canton continued their red-hot start with their sixth straight victory in a decisive win over Alfred State in a nonleague win at Alfred.

Bartle scored 22 points and added five rebounds and three steals as the Kangaroos stretched their mark to 6-0 in their record best start to the season since SUNY Canton became a Division III program. Sierra Pabo and Hope Aniceto each added 12 points for the Roos

Anna Merry scored 11 points for Alfred (0-5).

ONONDAGA CC 78, JEFFERSON CC 70

Onondaga Community College overcame a three-point third-quarter deficit by outscoring Jefferson CC 21-10 in the fourth to stay unbeaten and give the Cannoneers their first loss of the season, at Syracuse.

Cianna Papineau led a balanced scoring effort for the Lazers (6-0) with 14 points. Avianna Baker scored 13, Precious Gabriel 12 and Kathryn Grainger 10.

Kori Nichols scored a game-high 27 points for JCC (4-1). LaKaiya Butcher and Daelynn Alcock each scored 14 points and Delaney Wiley added 13.

FRAMINGHAM ST. 75, ST. LAWRENCE 66

Flannery O'Connor scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Framingham State defeated St. Lawrence on day two of the Middlebury Tip-Off Tournament in Middlebury, Vt.

Gwendolyn Carpenter added 14 points and Kelsey Yelle scored 15 off the bench for the Rams (4-0).

Elizabeth Flynn supplied 15 points and 18 rebounds for SLU (0-4). Norah Niesz added 14 points.

BATES 58, SUNY POTSDAM 35

Morgan Kennedy posted 22 points and 11 rebounds as Bates College rolled past SUNY Potsdam in the second round of the Cardinal Classic at SUNY Plattsburgh.

Elsa Daulerio added 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Bobcats (3-0), who jumped to a 14-3 first-quarter lead.

Jakia Howard led Potsdam (2-1) with 10 points and eight rebounds. Jenna Cotter grabbed nine rebounds.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

WILLIAMS COLLEGE 66, ST. LAWRENCE 58 (OT)

Alex Lee scored 19 points as Williams College rallied to hand St. Lawrence its first loss of the season in an overtime victory in Williamstown, Mass.

Williams trailed by nine with six minutes left in regulation but forced overtime after Ben McGraw hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final 1:17 to tie the game. McGraw finished with 15 points and Brandon Roughley scored 13 for the Ephs (4-1). Cole Prowitt-Smith went 4-for-4 from the line in overtime.

Gavin Macaulay, Aiden Macaulay and Andrew Cowan each scored 11 points for SLU (3-1).

REGIS COLLEGE 80, SUNY CANTON 68

Rau Russell scored 22 points added seven rebounds and went 6-for-6 from the line as Regis College used a large first-half lead to beat SUNY Canton at the Autism Awareness Classic at Curry College in Milton, Mass.

Evelyn Justin added 13 points and Harvey Jamir scored 12 for Regis (1-3), which led 46-26 at halftime.

Bryon Streb scored 15 points for the Kangaroos (2-3). Terrence Field and Jevonte Williams each contributed 13 points. Williams added nine rebounds.

In another men's game, Jefferson CC overpowered Onondaga CC 104-80 in Syracuse. JCC improved to 2-1.

SWIMMING

CLARKSON MEN TAKE 2ND

Sophomore Landon Colby broke through in the 200-meter butterfly for Clarkson's only first-place finish but numerous second-place showings gave the Golden Knights second overall in the men's portion of the North Country Invitational at SUNY Potsdam.

Colby recorded his victory in 2:04.39 as Clarkson recorded 480 points overall to place second to dominant St. Michael's College (655). Host SUNY Potsdam was fifth (167).

Colby also took second in the 100 butterfly and Clarkson's Michael Schroeder finished second to Colby in the 200 fly. Schroeder also finished second in the 100 backstroke. Clarkson also recorded individual seconds in the 50 freestyle (Connor Tasselmyer), 100 freestyle (Tasselmyer), 1650 freestyle (Casey Everett), 400 freestyle relay and 200 freestyle relay.

Potsdam's Ryan Orcutt was second in the 500 freestyle.

Potsdam won four diving events in the men's and women's events. Garrett O'Hara won the men's one-meter and 3-meter dive events and Sierra Jackel took the women's one- and 3-meter dives.

Potsdam was fifth in the women's event overall with 172 points, while Clarkson took third with 334. St. Michael's College swept the invite with 659 points in the women's division.

Clarkson's Maria Nenadic took second in the 200 individual medley, Gabriela McSwieney was second in the 1650 freestyle and 100 freestyle, and Bella Triolet placed second in the 100 backstroke.
