College roundup: Jefferson CC women's basketball team leaps to No. 5 in country

Feb. 12—WATERTOWN — The Jefferson Community College women's basketball team has vaulted to No. 5 in the country among NJCAA Division III programs after its victory last week against Onondaga Community College.

JCC, 18-1 overall, jumped from No. 11 to No. 5 in the weekly rankings released Monday to place one spot ahead of Onondaga CC. The Cannoneers defeated the Lazers 94-80 on Wednesday at JCC, avenging a 78-70 loss to Onondaga on Nov. 18.

That was the last time that JCC has lost as it's captured its last 14 straight games, heading into its regular-season home finale this Wednesday against Genesee CC. JCC's win streak is officially at 15 straight as it gained a forfeit win against Finger Lakes on Jan. 24.

The top four teams in the NJCAA rankings remained unchanged with Rochester Community and Technical College (18-2) first, Northland Community and Technical College (18-4) second, Minnesota West CC (19-7) third and Anoka-Ramsey CC fourth (18-5).

Onondaga (22-2), Dallas College Cedar Valley (11-5), Prince George's CC (11-5), Owens CC (11-11) and Nassau CC (16-6) round out the Top 10.

The Cannoneers are led by former Indian River players LaKaiya Butcher (17.6 points-per-game) and Daelynn Alcock (11.6), General Brown graduate Kori Nichols (15.9); Ogdensburg Free Academy's Abby Raven (10.9) and Thousand Islands' Delaney Wiley (9.9).

FLYNN ROOKIE OF WEEK

St. Lawrence University's Elizabeth Flynn garnered Liberty League Rookie of the Week honors Monday.

Flynn averaged 12.7 points per game and 13.0 rebounds per game over three contests last week for the Saints to win the award for the second straight week and the third time in four weeks.

Flynn, from Brentwood, Tenn., has been Rookie of the Week six times this season.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

MILES-FERGUSON WINS HONOR

Clarkson University graduate student Ryan Miles-Ferguson was named the Liberty League's Performer of the Week on Monday.

Miles-Ferguson averaged 30.5 pointers per game in contests against Union College and Ithaca College.

He also averaged 8.0 rebounds per game and 3.0 assists per game. Miles-Ferguson scored 33 points, one below his career high, against Ithaca.

Miles-Ferguson, from San Mateo, Calif., leads the Liberty League in ppg at 21.2.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY

PARENT GOALIE OF WEEK

SUNY Potsdam goaltender Magalie Parent was selected State University of New York Athletic Conference's Goalie of the Week on Monday.

Parent made 79 saves over two games, including a career-high 49 in Potsdam's 1-0 loss to nationally ranked SUNY Plattsburgh on Saturday. Parent, a sophomore from Trois-Rivières, Quebec, made 30 saves in a 2-1 loss to Plattsburgh on Friday.

Parent has posted a 2.21 goals-against average and .933 save percentage entering the Bears' final two games of the regular season this weekend.
