College roundup: Clarkson, St. Lawrence complete weekend sweeps in women's hockey

Oct. 1—POTSDAM — Goalie Michelle Pasiechnyk made 18 saves to back the Clarkson women's hockey team to a 4-2 triumph over Boston College on Saturday in a nonconference game at Cheel Arena.

With the win, the Golden Knights (4-0) swept the weekend series with the Eagles (0-2) after defeating Boston College, 3-0, on Friday.

Alexie Guay, Jenna Goodwin, Keira Hurry and Anne Cherkowski each scored a goal for Clarkson, with Guay scoring on the power play.

Julia Pellerin and Abby Newhook each tallied a goal for Boston College and goalie Grace Campbell finished with 31 saves.

ST. LAWRENCE 6, MERCYHURST 5 (OT)

Anna Segedi scored the deciding goal with 2.2 seconds remaining in overtime as the Saints rallied to defeat the Lakers in a nonconference game at Appleton Arena.

Julia Gosling scored a pair of goals, including the tying tally with 3.8 seconds remaining in regulation for St. Lawrence (2-0), which finished off a two-game sweep of Mercyhurst (2-2) to open its season.

Sarah Marchand contributed two goals and an assist for the Saints, who at one point trailed 5-2 when Thea Johansson scored an empty-net goal with 2:32 left.

Gosling followed with a power-play goal with 1:17 remaining and Marchand scored in the final minute before Gosling's tying goal.

Goalie Emma-Sofie Nordström made 26 saves, including four in overtime, to record the win.

FOOTBALL

UNION 34, ST. LAWRENCE 0

Donovan Pacatte threw for a pair of touchdowns and the Garnet Chargers went on to blank the Saints in the Liberty League opener for both teams in Schenectady.

The shutout marks Union's third in five games as it held St. Lawrence (2-3, 0-1) to 36 rushing yards and 136 yards of total offense.

Michael Fiore rushed for 91 yards and a pair of touchdowns to lead Union (5-0, 1-0) on the ground.

Quarterback Will Lederman finished with eight completions on the day for 66 yards and ran for 35 yards for the Saints.

MEN'S SOCCER

HOBART 2, CLARKSON 0

Nolan Fierro and Quinn Phillips each scored a goal and goalie Guillermo Castaneda Chang as the Statesmen (4-4-1, 3-0) blanked the Golden Knights in a Liberty League game in Potsdam.

Goalie Josh Morelli finished with five saves for Clarkson (6-2-0, 2-1).

ITHACA 1, ST. LAWRENCE 0

Jared Krasnove scored the game's lone goal and goalie Ian Whitfield generated a pair of saves as the Bombers (4-2-2, 2-1) blanked the Saints in a Liberty League game in Ithaca.

Ben Woelfinger finished with four stops for St. Lawrence (3-3-2, 1-1).

SUNY FREDONIA 2, SUNY POTSDAM 1

Andres Martinez scored the deciding goal in the 79th minute as the Blue Devils (5-3-3, 1-3) edged the Bears in a SUNYAC game in Potsdam.

Justin Mossey tallied a goal for SUNY Potsdam (3-5-1, 0-4) and goalie Lucas Schiel made two saves.

On Sunday, Jamestown Community College edged past Jefferson Community College, 3-2.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

The Cannoneers cruised to victory over the Jayhawks in a Region 3 game played in Watertown on Sunday.

JCC improved to 7-2 on the season with the win.

Goalie Kirsten Nelson made seven saves as the No. 4-ranked Herons (6-0-3, 2-0-2) topped the Golden Knights in a Liberty League game in Geneva.

Goalie Molly DiCaprio made 11 saves for Clarkson (6-2-2, 1-2-0).

ITHACA 2, ST. LAWRENCE 0

Allie McCabe and Jayne Bogle each tallied a goal and goalie Grace Hickey made four saves as the Bombers (6-2-2, 1-1-0) blanked the Saints in a Liberty League game in Canton.

Goalie Keely Snode totaled seven saves for St. Lawrence (2-2-3, 1-1-1).

SUNY FREDONIA 4, SUNY POTSDAM 0

Goalies Abby Szymkowiak (six saves) and Dani Rubino (one save) combined on the shutout as the Blue Devils (5-3-1, 2-2) downed the Bears in a SUNYAC game in Fredonia.

Savannah Bowie finished with 11 stops for SUNY Potsdam (2-5-2, 0-3-2).

MARYWOOD 5, SUNY CANTON 1

Riley Mulherin tallied three goals to spark the Pacers (3-5-1) to a nonconference win over the Kangaroos in Canton.

Goalie Skylar Williams totaled 13 saves for SUNY Canton (0-8-1).

On Sunday, SUNY Canton recorded a 0-0 tie with SUNY ESF in Canton.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL

SUNY CANTON SPLITS PAIR AT HOME

Freshman Bria Hunter recorded 22 kills and junior Sarah Balcom added 18 more as the Kangaroos team split a pair of five-set matches in the SUNY Canton Triad.

SUNY Canton (3-11) beat Alfred State 3-2 (25-19, 21-25, 25-23, 10-25, 17-15) in the opener before dropping a 3-2 decision (25-23, 25-23, 17-25, 19-25, 8-15) to Oswego State in second match.

MIDDLEBURY 3, CLARKSON 1

After picking up a win with a strong offensive showing in the first set, the Golden Knights struggled against the Panthers, eventually falling in four sets (19-25, 25-11, 25-15, 25-13) in the Skidmore Tournament in Saratoga Springs.

Allyson Treichel led the Clarkson (8-6) offense with nine kills, Anna Mayer totaled 10 assists and seven digs and Abigail Spector recorded 14 digs.

SUNY BROCKPORT 3, SUNY POTSDAM 0

The Bears were swept by the Golden Eagles (6-8, 2-0) in a SUNYAC match in Brockport, 25-20, 25-17 and 25-22.

Alyssa Adams recorded 11 kills, one ace and six digs for SUNY Potsdam (4-9, 0-2) and Sophia Layer, a Potsdam grad, finished with 10 assists, an ace and eight digs.

KANGAROOS TAKE SIXTH PLACE

Lance Bradley (30:48) recorded a 19th-place showing on the 8K course to pace SUNY Canton to a sixth-place finish at the Founding Tree Invitational in Amherst, Mass.
