COLDWATER, MI. - Just over a week ago athletes from across our fair county took to their respective regional track meets looking for postseason glory, each hoping to punch their ticket to the biggest stage of high school track in Michigan, the MHSAA Track and Field State Finals.

Branch County had its fair share of state qualifiers and will be well represented at each state finals from D2 all the way to D4. Last week’s The Daily Reporter Athlete of the Week voting consisted of those athletes who not only earned their way to the state finals, but did so thanks to an MHSAA Regional Title.

So, with that in mind, you the readers voted, and this week’s The Daily Reporter Athlete of the Week as sponsored by ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital, Omega Physical Therapy, and Coldwater Chiropractic and Wellness Center is Coldwater’s Grace Huff.

Huff earned this week’s honor after securing 34% of the vote, winning by just 23 total votes. Huff was honored after qualifying for her first ever MHSAA State Finals with a D2 Regional Title in her signature event, the 800 meter run. Huff brought home regional gold in a personal best time of 2 minute, 25.47 seconds and also served as a key member of the medal winning 800 meter relay team and the 1600 meter relay team. Earlier that week Huff also took home a win in dual meet action versus Northwest and Parma Western, again winning the 800 in a time of 2 minues, 30.16 seconds. Huff will continue her season this coming Saturday as she travels to the Division Two State Finals.

Finishing in second place in the voting just 23 votes back was sophomore throwing ace Elli Foley of Coldwater. Foley earned her trip to the MHSAA State Finals with her first career regional title, winning the gold medal in the shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 4 inches, a throw nearly two feet further than her next closest competition. Foley also finished in third place in the discus at regionals with a season best throw of 108 feet, 2 inches. Early in the week Foley swept the throwing events in dual meet action versus Northwest and Parma Western, winning the shot put with a throw of 40 feet, 4.5 inches and the discus with a throw of 101 feet, 7 inches.

Also earning votes in The Daily Reporter Athelte of the Week poll were Sophia Snellenberger of Quincy; Logan Cole of Union City; Nevada Gillons of Union City; Alex Hull of Union City; and Skyler Fraley of Union City.

Congratulations goes out once again to Coldwater’s Grace Huff, this week’s The Daily Reporter Athlete of the Week as sponsored by ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital, Omega Physical Therapy, and Coldwater Chiropractic and Wellness Center.
