BATTLE CREEK – The rolling hills and beautiful landscape of the Cedar Creek Golf Course in Battle Creek hosted the 2023 Interstate 8 girls golf conference championship on Wednesday.

Sitting atop the team standings after a long day of golf were the Harper Creek Beavers who earned themselves an Interstate 8 conference crown after shooting a team score of 367. Parma Western finished a distant second with a score of 383, while Coldwater came into the clubhouse in third place with a score of 432. Rounding out the team standings was Hastings in fourth place with a 443; Marshall in fifth place with a 444; Pennfield in sixth place with a 450; and Northwest in seventh place at 454.

Coldwater soccer remains unbeaten in I-8 with mercy win

COLDWATER – The Coldwater Cardinal varsity soccer team improved to 4-0 in the Interstate 8 conference with a big 8-0 mercy rule win over the visiting Northwest Mounties Tuesday night.

Coldwater’s Arif Ahmed started off the scoring for the Cardinals thanks to a penalty kick less than two minutes into the game. That goal opened the floodgates as scoring machine Laith Musa continued his hot streak on the pitch with one of two goals at the 36:24 mark, assisted by Tammum Ahmed.

Two minutes later it was Laith’s twin brother Ghaith Musa getting on the board, scoring with just over 24 minutes left in the half on a goal assisted by Ezaldeen Ahmed.

The Cardinals added to their lead at the 16:05 mark on the second goal of the day from Arif Ahmed, assisted by Mohammed Abdullah, pushing the lead to 5-0. Tammum Ahmed added a score at the 14:47 mark on a header off an impossibly long throw-in from Niko Downs, while Rashed Ahmed rounded out the first half scoring with a goal assisted by Liam Clark with 2:54 left to play in the first half.

With the squad leading 7-0 at the half, it was only a matter of time before the mercy rule was met, and it happened with 31:03 to play as Hisham Ahmed scored off another throw-in from Downs, finding the final score of 8-0.

Franky Ramos made two saves in goals for Coldwater who earned their second straight shutout win, after outshooting Northwest 21-2.

Coldwater improves to 9-5-1 overall on the season and 4-0 in the conference. Coldwater will see action again on Thursday when they host Harper Creek for Senior Night.

In J.V. action it was Coldwater taking the 3-1 win over Northwest.
