CMS wins defensive battle in rivalry matchup against WMS
Sep. 24—In a clash of undefeated middle school rivals Canton and Waynesville, the Bears emerged victorious with a hard-fought 16-8 victory Thursday at C. E. Weatherby Stadium.
The Mountaineers won the toss and elected to kick off to start the contest. Waynesville went with an onside kick to open the game and recovered it to start on offense.
The Mountaineers held the ball for the entire first quarter as they drove downfield. Waynesville managed to get inside the Canton five yard line but couldn't punch it in and turned the ball over on downs.
In the second quarter, the Bears drove the length of the field, found the end zone for six points and converted a two-point conversion to lead 8-0, a score that held until halftime.
Waynesville managed to answer in the second half with a touchdown and two-point conversion in the third to tie it up at 8.
Canton found the end zone once more and converted another two-point conversion to lead 16-8, which eventually became the final score.
