Clock is ticking for Chicago Bears to engineer Justin Fields trade before NFL free agency

We’re just nine days away from the start of NFL free agency. Caleb Williams might identify that fact as important. Justin Fields might, too. The Chicago Bears might be throwing out a smokescreen. They might be engaging in misdirection. Just because teams say certain things doesn’t mean they will actually do them. They could be using a trial balloon to gauge public reaction.

Nevertheless, the Bears did say they had a plan relative to the start of NFL free agency.

Steelers Wire wrote:

“The name most Pittsburgh Steelers fans are most interested in when it comes to trade is Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields. Bears general manager Ryan Poles spoke to the media on Tuesday and said that if the team plans to draft a quarterback at No. 1 overall in the 2024 NFL draft, they want to do their best to trade Fields before free agency begins.”

That’s now nine days away. Again, the Bears might not actually do this, but if they really are serious about clearing the deck and making way for Caleb Williams, they don’t have a ton of time left. We might get a real answer about the Bears’ plan in the near future.

Or, it could be that Chicago was just throwing out a smokescreen.

One alternative scenario: No team is offering a deal the Bears find to be significant and worthy of consideration.
