Cleveland Guardians vs. New York Mets recap; home run parade ends with win

CLEVELAND — The Guardians had won four consecutive games and seven of their last eight entering Tuesday night's matchup with the New York Mets, and they kept that good fortune going with a 7-6 win.

The Guardians have used this hot stretch to hold onto first place in the American League Central race, as the Kansas City Royals were 1.5 games behind Cleveland entering Tuesday. The Minnesota Twins have begun to falter and had lost seven consecutive games to fall 6.5 games behind the Guardians after Monday's games.

Cleveland swept the Twins over the weekend, which included Sunday's win and one of the most bizarre ninth innings you'll ever see in a baseball game.

Check back here for live score updates, analysis and highlights from Tuesday night's game. Below is some pregame information.

Guardians beat Mets 7-6

The Guardians called on Emmanuel Clase for the third consecutive day, and he converted the save, as the Guardians beat the Mets 7-6.

The Guardians have won five consecutive games and eight of their last nine.

Starling Marte home run trims Guardians lead to one run

It's a parade of two-run home runs.

Starling Marte has sliced the Guardians' lead to one run with a two-run home run of his own, this one to the Home Run Porch in left field.

The Guardians and Mets keep yo-yoing between a three-run difference and a one-run deficit.

David Fry home run again puts Guardians on top by three runs over Mets

David Fry has done it again.

Fry has been one of the Guardians' most productive hitters recently and has again given Cleveland a three-run lead with a two-run home run to right field in the sixth inning.

It was Fry's fifth home run of the year, and it gives the Guardians a 7-4 lead.

Over his last 20 plate appearances, Fry is hitting .462 with a .650 on-base percentage.

Jeff McNeil home run slices into Guardians lead in the sixth inning

Nick Sandlin escaped the fifth inning with the bases loaded. He couldn't escape the sixth unharmed, as Jeff McNeil just launched a two-run home run to right-center field that has cut the Guardians lead to 5-4.

This game has had a yo-yo feel to it. Every time the Guardians extend their lead, the Mets crawl back, and every time the Mets get close, the Guardians pull back out in front.

Jose Ramirez home run extends Guardians lead over Mets

Jose Ramirez is heating up.

Ramirez just drilled a two-run home run in the fifth that again puts the Guardians up three runs, 5-2. It's his 600th extra-base hit and his 228th career home run as he continues to track down Manny Ramirez, Albert Belle and Jim Thome on the franchise's all-time home run list.

In his previous 15 games entering Tuesday night, Ramirez was hitting .310 with a 1.020 OPS.

Nick Sandlin escapes bases loaded jam with back-to-back strikeouts; Guardians lead Mets 3-2

After a walk to Pete Alonso to load the bases with one out, Nick Sandlin escaped the threat by striking out Brandon Nimmo and J.D. Martinez to end the inning.

Sandlin's ERA now sits a 2.35 in what has been a strong opening third to his 2024 season.

Francisco Lindor RBI single cuts Guardians lead to 3-2 over Mets

Francisco Lindor has his first hit at Progressive Field since the 2020 season, and it's an RBI single to left field that cuts the Guardians' lead to 3-2 in the fifth.

Curry's day is done, as the Guardians are turning to Nick Sandlin with two runners on and one out in hopes of escaping the inning with their lead intact.

Mark Vientos home run gets the Mets on the board against Guardians

Xzavion Curry held the Mets scoreless through the first four innings before Mark Vientos drilled a solo home run in the fifth inning that cut the Guardians' lead to 3-1.

Curry started his season with 9 1/3 scoreless innings between his first outing in Boston and tonight against the Mets.

Guardians, Mets score: Jose Ramirez double puts Cleveland up 3-0 over New York

Jose Ramirez is credited with an RBI double, but at least half the credit goes to Mets right fielder Starling Marte.

Ramirez lined a ball to right-center field that probably should have been caught, but Marte misplayed it and allowed it to go over his head. That scored Freeman, putting the Guardians up 3-0, and credited Ramirez with a double.

Brayan Rocchio double gives Guardians the lead over the Mets

It's not just where you hit it, it's how you hit it.

With Bo Naylor on first base, Brayan Rocchio chopped a ball over the head of Mets first baseman Pete Alonso. The ball rolled nearly to the wall down the right field line, allowing Naylor to score from first and Rocchio to easily reach third. The play was later ruled a double, with Rocchio advancing to third on the throw.

Tyler Freeman followed with a double to score Rocchio to give the Guardians a 2-0 lead in the third inning.

Guardians lineup vs. Mets; Johnathan Rodriguez major league debut to be Tuesday against the Mets

Guardians outfield prospect Johnathan Rodriguez is in Tuesday night's lineup, which will mark his debut in the majors.

Rodriguez, who replaced Ramon Laureano, will bat seventh and start in right field.

Carlos Carrasco injury update: Guardians scratch starter, call up Xzavion Curry to start Tuesday's game against Mets

Carlos Carrasco was slated to start Tuesday's game against the Mets, but that won't be happening.

Carrasco has been placed on the injured list with an acute neck spasm. Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said Carrasco had been feeling off for a few days, and this was the needed course of action.

Xzavion Curry will take the mound for the Guardians Tuesday night after being recalled from Triple-A Columbus. Curry has made just one appearance in the majors this season, but he was terrific in it, allowing just two hits and striking out three across five scoreless innings against the Boston Red Sox.

Francisco Lindor returns to Cleveland; Revisiting the trade with the Mets

Monday night's game was Lindor's first in Cleveland since the blockbuster trade that sent him to New York prior to the 2021 season.

Lindor spoke of what he remembered most about his Cleveland days, and we broke down where the trade stands today.
