Cleveland Browns training camp updates, day 10: All's quiet on the QB front vs. Commanders

BEREA — The Hall of Fame Game has come and gone. Joe Thomas' Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony has as well.

So the Browns were back to work in front of their fans on Sunday. It was just the second time they've had an open practice in Berea despite it being the 10th training camp practice of the season.

There were the eight practices in nine days at The Greenbrier in West Virginia, the last of which was held a week ago. They had one open workout in Berea last Tuesday before playing the New York Jets in last Thursday's Hall of Fame Game in Canton.

"We're still [doing] installation, so we're just getting out of our installation on offense, defense, and special teams," Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said before practice. "So [defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is] putting in new blitzes, we're putting in new couple new runs, passes, those type of things. ... And again, that first Hall of Fame game comes at you fast. ... So just continuing to teach and make sure that we're not skipping any steps."

This week will be about as close to a "normal" week of training camp as the Browns will have this month. They are scheduled to practice in front of the fans Sunday, Monday and Wednesday, with their lone home preseason game at 7:30 p.m. Friday against the Washington Commanders.

As the players and coaches say all the time, though, it's one day at a time. Keep up to date with any developments throughout Sunday right here.

Kevin Stefanski mum about QB plan against Washington Commanders

Stefanski acknowledged Sunday he's already got an idea of how the quarterback rotation will work for Friday's preseason game against the Commanders. However, that will not be disclosed to the public any earlier than he absolutely has to divulge it.

With two joint practices awaiting Aug. 14-15 against the Eagles in Philadelphia — meaning another game heavy of Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Kellen Mond on Aug. 17 — it would be a surprise if Deshaun Watson didn't at least start the game against Washington. Backup Joshua Dobbs also would be expected to get a healthy amount of reps.

Neither Watson nor Dobbs, nor any other key contributor, played against the Jets.

Isaiah Thomas, Alex Wright, Maurice Hurst II out with undisclosed injuries

Defensive ends Alex Wright and Isaiah Thomas, as well as defensive tackle Maurice Hurst II, made up three-fourths of the Browns' starting defensive line against the Jets in the Hall of Fame Game. All three did not practice on Sunday due to injuries.

There was no immediate word on the nature of their injuries.

Thomas played 25 defensive snaps Thursday, the most of the three. Hurst played 19 snaps, while Wright played 15.

Elijah Moore with the catch of the day

There weren't many truly signature plays from either side during Sunday's fully padded practice. One that did stand out involved a player who has stood out a lot so far.

The Browns offense and defense were involved in one-on-in drills when receiver Elijah Moore was matched up against Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward. The two were running stride for stride down the sideline when Deshaun Watson perfectly placed a pass over the reach of Ward and into the hands of Moore, who raced the rest of the way into the end zone.

The catch set off a massive celebration among the Browns' offensive players. The defensive players, meanwhile, were forced to do push-ups after losing the overall drill.

Veteran rest days for three key Cleveland Browns

Myles Garrett, David Njoku and Joel Bitonio were among the players who did not suit up. No need for worry, though, as all three were given veteran rest days.

The Browns went through a full practice on Saturday morning before the Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony. It was not a fully padded practice.

Attendance report for Browns: Harrison Bryant, Jaelon Darden still sitting out

Three other Browns players besides Greg Newsome II remained out of practice. Tight end Harrison Bryant hasn't practiced since the team was at The Greenbrier, while receiver/return man Jaelon Darden hasn't practiced since leaving the July 29 workout in West Virginia with a leg injury and defensive tackle Trysten Hill (hand) also hasn't practiced since then.

Matthew Adams also remained sidelined while the linebacker recovers from a calf injury. He was not wearing a walking boot during Sunday's practice.

Linebackers Anthony Walker Jr. and Sione Takitaki both had usual rest days. Both are coming back from season-ending injuries from last year.

Tight end Jordan Akins was back on the field for the first time since West Virginia, when he missed time while resting a knee injury. So, too, is offensive tackle Tyrone Wheatley Jr., who had only gone through individual work since last Sunday's scuffle at the end of practice.

Cornerback Greg Newsome II remains out with groin injury

Cornerback Greg Newsome II remains absent from practice as he continues to work through a groin injury. The third-year pro left practice last Tuesday and hasn't returned to the field since.

"Better, progressing," Stefanski said before Sunday's practice. "I'd say he's day to day. Not ready just yet."

Daylen Baldwin tears a tendon in his knee in Hall of Fame Game

Receiver Daylen Baldwin was one of two players the Browns waived Friday afternoon with an injury designation after they sustained significant injuries in the Hall of Fame Game. Cornerback Thomas Graham Jr. also was waived after suffering an ankle injury.

Baldwin's agent, James Peterson, confirmed to the Beacon Journal on Sunday that the receiver tore a small tendon behind his knee, and that the recovery time is between 6 to 8 weeks. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero was the first to report the injury

Peterson also indicated the injury settlement the Browns were working on with Baldwin wasn't going to preclude the possibility he could return to the team once healthy. He appeared in one game for the Browns last year, catching two passes for 25 yards in a Dec. 17 win over the Baltimore Ravens.
