Clemson football score, game updates vs. Duke: Dabo Swinney, Tigers in 2023 season opener

DURHAM, N.C. — Clemson football will try to open the 2023 season with a win when it faces Duke on Monday at Wallace-Wade Stadium.

The No. 9 Tigers are coming off an 11-3 season and an ACC Championship. They are entering with a new starting quarterback in sophomore Cade Klubnik and new offensive coordinator Garrett Riley.

Duke overachieved in 2022, its first season under coach Mike Elko, going 9-4 overall and 5-3 in the ACC.

Clemson and Duke haven't played each other since 2018, and the Tigers own the all-time series 37-16-1.

MISTAKE AFTER MISTAKE: Every time Clemson football wasted a chance at points in upset loss to Duke

RUSHING THE FIELD: Duke fans storm field after Clemson, Dabo Swinney stunned in 2023 college football opener

5:01 left: Klubnik's pass is deflected and interception. That's the ballgame, almost certainly.

Clemson's offense making a year's worth of major mistakes.

8:15 left: Cade Klubnik slides short of a first down on 4th and 7. A Duke defender is called for a dead-ball targeting, which seems like a flaw of the rule book, and it's Duke's ball anyway.

Clemson's offense continues to be unique in its mistakes.

Phil Mafah fumble on 1st and goal turns into Duke touchdown

10:33 left: Jaquez Moore 9-yard touchdown run over the right side may well put this game out of reach for the Tigers.

Two-point try good. Just like that, Duke 21, Clemson 7.

14:26 left: Disaster. Phil Mafah fumbles on 1st and goal from the 1, and Jaylen Stinson returns into Clemson territory.

Duke ball. Nice hustle by Klubnik, but Clemson's mistakes have been crippling and numerous.

Third quarter

5:18 left: Klubnik tried to pull a read-option but fumbles. Duke ball. Bad, bad, bad football in the red zone for Clemson.

6:04 left: Tyler Brown open over the middle for 21 yards. Nice throw by Klubnik. 1st and goal.

6:30 left: Shipley up to 100 rushing yards after a 16-yard carry. Tigers inside the Duke 30.

7:19 left: Clemson offense finding some holes on the ground. Klubnik scrambles for a first down, then Shipley up the middle for 9.

8:21 left: Duke three-and-out after the missed field goal. T.J. Parker has been very good off the edge. Had a nice tackle helping defend a quick throw on that drive and has two QB hurries in the game.

Clemson in big trouble after shanked field goal try

9:46 left: Clemson had 1st and goal from the Duke 1, then had a false start, a bad read-option keep by Klubnik, an incomplete pass and a doomed QB draw.

Robert Gunn's field goal is shanked wide left. Blocked or not, Clemson's field goal operation has been awful today. Dating back to the Orange Bowl, Clemson has missed five of its last seven field goal tries.

Clemson still down 13-7 and in big trouble in Durham.

12:10 left: Phil Mafah shoots through the middle for a 49-yard run. Longest play for the Clemson offense by far.

Riley Leonard runs through Clemson defense for a 44-yard TD run as Duke leads

12:40 left: Leonard designed run on third down goes for a Duke touchdown. Ran right through Barrett Carter and past Nate Wiggins.

Duke 13, Clemson 7

27 seconds left: Duke converts a 4th and 7 inside of the Clemson 30. Clemson defense switching between press man and playing with a lot of cushion on the outside.

1:21 left: Another Duke back left wide open, and Jordan Waters picks up 24 yards. Blue Devils backs have 52 receiving yards.

2:33 left: A sack thwarts the Clemson drive. Tigers will punt.

3:49 left: First down catches by Briningstool, Williams and Mafah has Clemson near midfield.

PAT good. Clemson 7, Duke 6.

12:21 left: Jalon Calhoun muffs a rolling punt, and Clemson recovers inside the Duke 20. Huge play. Wade Woodaz with the recovery.

14:19 left: Todd Pelino's 42-yard field goal is good.

Duke 6, Clemson 0.

First quarter

3:32 left: A 3rd and 6 wide receiver screen to Williams goes nowhere.

5:20 left: Robert Gunn's 41-yard field goal attempt is blocked. Was a low kick.

7:25 left: Here's a rhythm for the Clemson offense, with Antonio Williams picking up 18 yards over the middle. Tigers inside the Duke 25.

Seeing some tempo.

8:20 left: First look at Phil Mafah and Shipley in the same backfield, and it results in a 11-yard Shipley run to midfield.

9:10 left: Tristan Leigh, by the way, is the starting left tackle tonight. He continues as Clemson starts its second drive.

Clemson defense holds, but Duke takes early lead on FG

9:20 left: Clemson defense holds on a goal-to-go situation, and Duke settles for a 22-yard field goal from Todd Pelino.

Duke 3, Clemson 0.

11:45 left: Sahmir Hagans makes a catch over the middle and runs inside the Clemson 30, but RJ Mickens' hit forced a fumble. Andrew Mukuba recovers. Clemson ball, pending review. Can't tell if Hagans started to lose control before hitting the ground.

Positive drive for Duke before that. Clemson's defense doing a lot of reacting.

After review, fumble is overturned. Duke has the ball in scoring range on its first drive.

First Walk of Champions of the season

Clemson football travel roster released; Tre Williams out

Defensive lineman Tre Williams is not available for the Tigers season opener Monday.

Williams was not on the travel roster released before game time. The junior has been recovering from a shoulder injury, and Dabo Swinney indicated that he may redshirt this season to get fully healthy.

True freshmen Peter Woods and Stephiylan Green are on the roster, along with T.J. Parker. The three are a part of a dynamite group of freshman defensive linemen from the 2023 recruiting class. Woods had high praise throughout the preseason and was listed as an OR at first-team defensive tackle alongside Ruke Orhorhoro.

Tyler Brown, the true freshman receiver from Greenville, is on the travel roster, as is Troy Stellato. The sophomore missed last season with a knee injury, and Swinney said last week that he recently returned fully to practice.
