REPLAY: How Clemson football fell to Florida State in overtime, dashing ACC and CFP hopes

CLEMSON — Clemson football fell short in its bid to extend its winning streak over Florida State to eight games Saturday when the Tigers lost 31-24 to the Seminoles at Memorial Stadium.

Florida State had not beaten the Tigers since 2014, and its previous win at Clemson was 2013.

The No. 23 Tigers (2-2, 0-2 ACC) now face an unlikely climb to the ACC championship and a berth in the four-team College Football playoff.. No. 3 Florida State (4-0, 2-0) is in the driver's seat for both.

Klubnik finished 25-for-38 for 283 yards with a touchdown. The Tigers rushed for 146 yards, led by Phil Mafah with 69 and Will Shipley with 67.

Clemson held FSU to 22 yards rushing on 20 carries. The Seminoles entered averaging 195 yards rushing per game. FSU quarterback Travis Jordan passed for 289 yards, completing 21 of 37 passes. Johnny Wilson, the Seminoles' 6-foot-7 wide receiver, had five receptions for 94 yards. Keon Coleman had five for 86 yards with two touchdowns, including the game-winner.

Clemson football score updates vs. Florida State Seminoles

Overtime

Clemson is unable to answer the Seminoles' overtime touchdown. Cade Klubnik threw incomplete on first down from the FSU 25, but Will Shipley gained nine yards on a second-down run. However, Klubnik's third-down pass to Adam Randall to the left flat was stopped at the line of scrimmage and on fourth down, he threw incomplete to Beaux Collins ending the game.

Florida State 31, Clemson 24: Seminoles take first lead of the game

Florida State takes its first lead with two plays of the overtime. After a 1-yard run, Travis Jordan throws to Keon Coleman for a 24-yard touchdown. Coleman beat Jeadyn Lukas, playing because of an injury to Nate Wiggins on the TIgers' final defensive series of regulation. Ryan Fitzgerald kicks the PAT.

Clemson 24, FSU 24: Seminoles return fumble on sack of Cade Klubnik into touchdown

0:31 remaining: Clemson had been turnover-free until the final minute of the third quarter when FSU linebacker Kalen DeLoachd went unblocked on a blitz and slammed into Cade Klubnik, who fumbled as he fell. DeLoach picked up the fumble and returned it 56 yards for a touchdown. The play negated a promising drive that included a 46-yard run by Phil Mafah, who appeared to be responsible for blitz coverage on the play that DeLoach sacked Klubnik.

Clemson 24, FSU 17: Cade Klubnik, Will Shipley put Clemson football back in front

3:32 remaining: Will Shipley put the finishing touch on the drive with his 27th career rushing touchdown, but Cade Klubnik was the catalyst. He launched the drive by shrugging off a should-pad-high sack attempt and turning it into a 17-yard run and drilled a 13-yard completion to tight end Jake Briningstool to the 1 as he was being rocked by a blitzing defender. Klubnik is 18-for-27 passing with 237 yards and has rushed for 16 yards. He has a touchdown pass and a touchdown run.

Clemson 17, FSU 17: Jordan Travis brings FSU even with Clemson football

12:00 remaining: Jordan Travis, who led FSU on two scoring drives to close the first half, made it three in a row to open the second. On his first play, he threw downfield to Johnny Wilson for a 41-yard gain to the Clemson 39. The Seminoles moved to the Clemson 25 and converted a fourth-and-one with a 10-yard pass, but the play was negated by an illegal formation penalty. Ryan Fitzgerald then kicked a 48-yard field goal.

Second quarter

Clemson 17, FSU 14: Jordan Travis, FSU respond and cut into Clemson's lead before half

0:22 remaining: Quarterback Jordan Travis closed the half with a second consecutive impressive the he capped with a 1-yard touchdown. He led the Seminoles 71 yards in seven plays, the biggest being a 38-yard pass to Keon Coleman after escaping containment and then pursuit by Xavier Thomas.

Clemson 17, FSU 7: Cade Klubnik shines as Clemson football widens lead vs. FSU

2:12 remaining: Responding to an impressive scoring drive by FSU, Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik engineered perhaps the most impressive drive of his young career. After completing a short pass to Troy Stellato for a 14-yard gain, Klubnik sensed the Seminoles' pass rush on his next pass play, avoided a sack and turned the play into a 4-yard gain. He went back to Stellato for 7 yards on third down, then identified a mismatch with a defensive end covering tight end Jake Briningstool, threw a perfect pass that Briningstool turned into a 33-yard gain to the FSU 12. Two plays later, he slipped a pass to Will Shipley for a 10-yard touchdown. Klubnik has completed nine consecutive passes.

Clemson 10, FSU 7: Seminoles find their rhythm against Clemson football defense

5:10 remaining: Travis Jordan passed to wide-open Keon Coleman for a touchdown on third-and-goal fromt he 7. Coleman juked Clemson safety R.J. PIckens on his route. Florida State, held to 45 yards on its first 17 offensive plays, moved 75 yards on 13 plays for the score, including four plays of 10 yards or longer.

Clemson 10, FSU 0: Cade Klubnik caps impressive drive with sneak for touchdown

11:33 remaining: After Clemson's defense forced a three-and-out and sacked FSU quarterback Jordan Travis on third down, the Seminoles' short punt gave the Tigers the ball at their 49. Klubnik completed two passes for 41 yards, including a 28-yarder down the middle to freshman Tyler Brown to the 6. One play after a defensive holding penalty gave Clemson a first-and-goal at the 2, Klubnik kept and drove up the middle for the score.

First quarter

Clemson 3, FSU 0: 'Newbie' kicker Jonathan Weitz gives Clemson football early lead

1:47 left: Jonathan Weitz, whose return to Clemson made headlines this week, gives Clemson a 3-0 lead with a 30-yard field goal. The Tigers drove 79 yards on 15 plays, hindered by a couple of offensive penalties late in the drive.
