Classic in the Country Day 3: West Holmes routs Strasburg

BERLIN TOWNSHIP − Day Three at Classic in the Country Challenge XXI featured several matchups of elite players and teams and also included a couple one-sided affairs.

West Holmes 53, Strasburg 32

Keegan Uhl canned four triples and Briar Cline busted three to lead the Knights from the perimeter.

Aveona Yoder did the damage inside, hitting all nine shots she attempted from the field to pace the West Holmes attack with 19 points. Cline chipped in 14 and Uhl finished with 12 for the winners.

After the two teams played pretty evenly through the first half, with the Knights building a 23-17 lead at the half, Uhl connected twice from long range to help West Holmes open up a 10-point lead, and they never looked back from there.

"We had lots of players making good plays, making shots, getting post deflections," West Holmes coach Lindsy Belden said. "Aveona played well, but everybody played well together. This was one of those games where we were a cohesive unit. Hopefully we can use that as we go forward."

The West Holmes coach liked the way here team played hard and competed.

"I was proud how they reacted after that tough one on Saturday," Belden said. "I thought we came out really aggressive and ready to get better. They played with a little more intensity, a little bit harder; a little bit of fight and some toughness.

"Playing Saturday and Monday gives you that tournament feel, where you play somebody one night, then quickly have to turn around and prepare for somebody the next night," Belden continued. "When you play teams like this that you don't know anything about, we were able to guard things a little differently after having a day to talk about it."

She added that the weekend at Classic in the Country was a good measuring stick to see where her team is at.

Strasburg, which dipped to 10-3 with the loss, got 12 points apiece from Sophia Secrest and Riley Thomas. Thomas also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Fairland 58, Gilmour Academy 45

In Monday's opener at Classic in the Country, the Dragons stormed out to an early led and rolled over Gilmour Academy behind a balanced attack that featured four double-digit scorers.

Kylee Bruce led the way with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. Bailey Russell provided the outside pop, drilling a pair of 3-pointers on her way to 12 points. Bree Allen added 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Addison Goodby chipped in 11 for the winners.

Helen Holey and Elaine Kline-Ruminski scored 14 to pace the Lancers. Nicci Finazzo finished with 10.

Olentangy 65, Unioto 63

Freshman phenom Sydney Mobley poured in 28 points and muscled down 18 rebounds as the Braves hung on to topple the Shermans Monday morning at the Perry Reese Jr. Community Center.

Chayla Rankin added 11 points and seven rebounds for the winners.

Unioto's one-two punch was provided by junior Mya Hamilton with 25 points and sophomore with 22.

Olentangy jumped out early but clung to a 34-32 at the break. Unioto pulled ahead 49-48 after three quarters, but there was too much Mobley down the stretch.

Mason 49, Belleville 28

The Comets showed the visitors from Michigan how tough Ohio hoops can be, jumping out to an early 21-7 lead and never looking back.

Madison Parrish and Riley Yost were the lone Comets to score in double digits with 14 and 11 points respectively.

S Savoury led the Tigers with 15 points and seven rebounds.

Anthony Wayne 63, Magnificat 59

The super siblings did it again. The team that features three sets of twins outlasted the balanced attack of Magnificat in a top 10 battle of Division I powers.

The Bender sisters were once again too much to overcome. Elise Bender pumped in a game-high 29 points, going 10-for-10 from the foul line. Her twin Brooke added 14, including four 3-pointers, while Mallory Pike, half of another set of twins popped in four triples for an additional dozen to help the Generals slip past the Blue Streaks.

Magnificat had four players reach double figures, led by Reese Roggenburk, who was a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor for 14 points. Sofia Wilson added 12, Julia Hall 11 and Katie Maryo 10 for the Blue Streaks.

Magnificat led 20-16 after one, 31-29 at the half and 50-45 after three quarters, but the Generals closed out on an 18-9 run to post the victory.

Portsmouth 46, Laurel Academy 38

In a battle that pitted a pair of premier sophomores in the state, Portsmouth's Sienna Allen had a little more help than Laurel Academy's Saniyah Hall as the Trojans pulled out a narrow victory.

Allen pumped in 21 points, including four 3-pointers, grabbed nine rebounds and added a pair of assists. She was joined by teammate Daysha Reid in double figures with 19.

Hall followed up her record-setting 43-point performance on Sunday with a 16-point, 13-rebound effort before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter. She was the lone Gator in double figures.

The Trojans built an early five-point lead and stretched it to nine after three quarters en route to the win.

Brush 50, Kettering Fairmont 36

After playing even up through the first half, Brush picked up its defensive intensity in the second half and pulled away to a big win over the Firebirds.

The Arcs ran their record to 16-2 with the win, behind a balanced attack, led by 13 apiece from Chaniyra McDowell-Isaacs and Jakalyn Brown and 10 from Brooklyn Vickers. Tatiana Mason chipped in with nine points and 11 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end.

Kaylah Thornton was the lone Fairmon player in double figures with 12.
