CIF-SS Softball Playoffs Roundup: Sultana among local teams to advance to the second round
The Sultana softball team is moving on to the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 playoffs after beating Woodrow Wilson 7-2 on Thursday afternoon.
Savannah Vanderpool continued her dominance in the circle for Sultana. The junior struck out six batters and allowed just three hits in the complete game.
Vanderpool also collected a pair of hits at the plate.
Offensively, it took the Sultans a while to get going. The Sultans eventually scored all seven runs off of three home runs, including a pair of three-run shots.
Hope Merrill hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to put Sultana on the board.
Avery Rodriguez smacked a three-run home run in the fifth inning, followed by Jordan Mullinax giving the Sultans a five-run lead with a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth.

Sultana (21-8) is on the road against Diamond Bar, which beat Don Lugo 19-9, for the second round.
Here’s a look at how the rest of the local softball teams fared in the first round of the CIF-SS playoffs.
Oak Hills 13, Monrovia 3
At Oak Hills, the Bulldogs jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning and never looked back, winning by mercy-rule in the first round of the Division 4 playoffs.
Amaya Sigala put the Bulldogs on the board with a two-run double, and then came around to score on a passed ball later on. Sigala ended 3 for 3 with a home run, five RBIs and three runs.
Daylin Hoenisch also had three hits. She ended 3 for 4 with a RBI and three runs.
Rylie Gresham-Center went 2 for 4 with two runs; and Dallyse York hit a three-run home run.
Maddie Romo picked up the win in the circle. She struck out 10 batters and allowed seven hits in her five innings of work. She also went 2 for 2 with two RBIs at the plate.
Oak Hills (18-6) is on the road for the second round against Jurupa Hills, which beat Northwood 9-7
Quartz Hill 10, Apple Valley 1
At Lancaster, the Sun Devils’ season came to an end in the first round of the Division 5 playoffs after being held scoreless on six hits against the No. 1 seed.
To reach the first round, Apple Valley beat Kaiser 14-11 in the wild card round on Tuesday. Peyton Gaytan powered the offense for the Sun Devils against Kaiser with two home runs. She ended 4 for 5 with six RBIs, four runs and a stolen base.
Gaytan was one of four Apple Valley players to collect four hits. Bethany Morrison went 4 for 5 with two RBIs, three runs and two stolen bases; Brianna McCourt went 4 for 5 with a RBI and three runs; and Marley Fic went 4 for 4 with a RBI and a run.
Garden Grove 12, Barstow 6
At Garden Grove, the season came to an end for the Aztecs in the first round of the Division 5 playoffs.
Garden Grove took a 3-1 lead in the second inning and never relinquished it.
Barstow ends the season with a 15-13 overall record.
South El Monte 7, Silverado 0
At El Monte, Silverado’s season came to an end in the first round of the Division 5 playoffs.
Valerie Beltran, Haylee Stanislawski, Aryhana Shyne and Alexis Rodriguez each had a hit for the Hawks. Silverado’s season ends with an overall record of 9-12.
Granite Hills 11, Flintridge Prep 1
At Apple Valley, the Cougars are moving on to the second round of the Division 6 playoffs after winning by mercy rule.
Jazmine Gonzalez led the offense by going 3 for 3 with four RBIs and a run; Mylie Shepard went 3 for 4 with a RBI, two runs and a stolen base; Kathryn McCartney went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, a run and a stolen base; and Mia Vazquez went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs.
Granite Hills (18-6-1) is on the road for the second round against Lancaster, which beat Savanna 5-1.

University Prep 4, San Jacinto Valley 3
At Victorville, Saidy Gonzalez drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Jaguars to the second round of the Division 6 playoffs.
Carsyn Leon singled to lead off the inning, and Valerie Garica pinch-ran for her. The Jaguars loaded the bases with no outs, setting the stage for Gonzalez.
University Prep got on the board in the fifth inning on a single from Amarie Castro and then San Jacinto Valley Academy struck for its three runs on a pair of home runs in the top of the sixth.
Castro tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with a run-scoring single.
University Prep (26-3) is on the road against Mayfield, which beat Costa Mesa 7-3, for the second round.
Orangewood Academy 8, Academy for Academic Excellence 6
At Apple Valley, the Knights couldn’t hold an early lead and ended up losing in the first round of the Division 7 playoffs.
AAE jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings, and Orangewood Academy chipped away tying the game 6-6 in the top of the fifth inning. The Spartans scored the eventual game-winning runs in the seventh inning on a two-run home run.
Paityn Thibodeaux hit a three-run home run in the first inning for the Knights, and also drew a walk and scored another run.
Kayla Berg ended 2 for 5 with one RBI and a run, and Hayden Gonzales and Eva Best each had a hit and scored a run.
The Knights end the season with a 16-3 overall record.
Academy of Careers & Exploration 23, Nuview Bridge 2
At Helendale, the Eagles racked up 20 runs within three innings and cruised into the second round of the Division 7 playoffs.
Danaka Pelayes led the offensive charge by going 5 for 5 with two RBIs, four runs and two stolen bases; Addison Shockley went 4 for 5 with a pair of home runs, four RBIs and four runs; Emily Castrejon went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and four runs; Aniya Edwards went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, two runs and a stolen base; Araceli Manzo went 3 for 5 with two RBIs, three runs and two stolen bases; Kamie Costa went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs; and Bethany White went 2 for 3 with four RBIs.
ACE (13-11) is on the road for the second round against Leuzinger, which beat Animo Leadership 23-10.
Excelsior 15, Santa Ana 3
At Santa Ana, the Eagles are moving on to the second round of the Division 8 playoffs with a mercy-rule victory on the road.
Excelsior scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning to jump out to a 12-run lead.
Sam Minghelli led the offense by going 4 for 4 with four RBIs, two runs and a stolen base; Rylie Hunsaker went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs; Tristen Gonzalez went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs; Alany Esparza went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run; and Abigail Wymore went 2 for 3 with a RBI and a run.
Excelsior (14-13) is home for the second round against United Christian Academy, which beat Santa Ana Valley 10-6.
