Chucky Hepburn’s poise on the court is well beyond his years
In a program that’s been known for its mantra “get old, stay old”, it was rather unusual to see a true freshman take the reigns as starting point guard for the Badgers.
As a matter of fact, Chucky Hepburn became the first true freshman to start the season-opener at point guard since Badgers legend Devin Harris did it back in 2001.
The former Bellevue West standout has done everything UW requires of its players to see the floor early in their careers. He plays exceptional defense, takes care of the basketball, and values getting his teammates involved.
Anyone who has watched the Nebraska native play knows he is a fierce competitor, and a natural born leader. That’s why it should come as no surprise that Hepburn is third on the team, averaging 29.6 minutes per game.
Hepburn has started all 15 games for the No. 13 Badgers this season, and has provided a veteran-like presence as Wisconsin’s lead guard. Despite this being his first taste of basketball at the collegiate level, the true freshman has stayed calm and under control all season long.
Just halfway through his first season in the program, he’s already earned a reputation around the league for being a stalwart defender for the Badgers. He has terrific situational awareness, works hard to get over the top of ball screens, and is constantly beating the ball handler to their spot without taking unnecessary risks.

The grit and resolve that Hepburn plays with make him a luxury for a head coach like Greg Gard. Anytime you mix work ethic with remarkable defensive instincts, you’ve got a player to be excited about.
On the season, Hepburn is averaging 7.3 points, 2.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.2 steals.
The Nebraska native is currently second on the team in assists (31) and is tied for the team lead in steals (18). The 20th ranked point guard in the 2020 recruiting class is looking like a perfect fit for the Badgers.
