Christman starting senior season with bang for Lakewood football

HEBRON — Week 2 is in the books, and for all 818 football teams in Ohio, all eyes arefocused on winning and the playoffs.

Two games in for Lakewood, the Lancers find themselves 1-1 with a win this past Friday against Liberty Union 28-23.

"We’re just taking the season one game at a time and taking full advantage of what the other teams give us," Lakewood coach John Poulnott said.

Every season means a lot to the school, the fans and the coaches. It however, means themost to the seniors and the leaders of the team.

Especially for seniors like Tyler Christman, who plays receiver and linebacker for theLancers. Christman missed a bit of practice time due to a concussion, but the 5-foot-11, 165-poundsenior is playing with a vengeance, making plays on both sides of the ball.

In the Week 1 loss to West Muskingum, Christman had three receptions for 22 yards, including an acrobatic touchdown catch offensively. Defensively, he had an interception with a tackle for a loss.

"We’re tired of losing. It's my senior year and we want to win," Christman said.

In the win against Liberty Union, Christman put in even more work on both sides of the ball yetagain. Offensively, he had four receptions for 42 yards, and defensively, he had sixtackles, five of them for a loss.

"Missed tackles will make you lose games, and I'm tired of losing." said the motivatedChristman, who also has set some goals for the team and himself.

His first goal is to have a winning record.

"Winning is the most important goal I have for me and my teammates." said Christman.

His second goal is to lead the team in tackles, which will help him achieve his third goal of being named Licking County League-Cardinal Division first team. He is a part of a senior class that made a commitment in the offseason that has carried into the season.

"We all have gym memberships, but we work out at the school gym mostly," Christman said. "We're a tight,close-knit group. We bring our players up and not tear them down."

The Lancers led last week's game much of the way, but they trailed 23-21 in the fourth quarter before senior Adam Crawford's 20-yard TD run. He accounted for three scores, throwing a TD pass to junior Hunter Crawford, and senior Isaiah Mitchell also ran for a score.

On Friday, Lakewood visits Bexley (1-1), which rolled to a 47-6 victory against Mifflin on the strength of five Jackson Frey TD passes to Jamie Wright. The duo connected eight times for 212 yards in a 28-14 loss to Franklin Heights in Week 1.
