Chris Herren on his time battling addiction as a Boston Celtic
Former Boston Celtics point guard Chris Herren was the epitome of a New England floor general. He grew up in Fall River, Massachusetts, in a family of basketball junkies. He was accepted to play his college ball at Boston College (we will overlook his inexplicable lack of fandom for Larry Bird).
Then, he became involved with drugs and was kicked out of the school he had chosen over blue-blood programs such as Kentucky and Duke. Herren held his addiction down long enough to transfer to Fresno State and get drafted by the Denver Nuggets, who dealt him to his hometown Celtics with Bryant Stith for Calbert Cheaney and Robert Pack in 2000.
From there, his life went downhill. Herren was cut by Boston, and then he was arrested for drugs after passing out in a drive-through. His life hit bottom when he was involved in an accident while high and needed to be resuscitated.
Herren eventually got himself clean and continued his career abroad, but he now helps others avoid the path he once found himself on.
