Chiefs place assistant coach Britt Reid on leave amid investigation into car crash
The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Tuesday that the team has placed outside linebackers coach Britt Reid on administrative leave amid an investigation into a car crash that left a five-year-old girl in critical condition with brain injuries.
According to a police report, Reid, the son of head coach Andy Reid, told police that he had two to three drinks in addition to prescription Adderall before getting behind the wheel of his truck and crashing into two cars pulled off the side of a Missouri highway near the Chiefs facility last Thursday. Police are also investigating whether cell phone use played a role in the crash, according to KSHB in Kansas City.
Injured girl remains in critical condition
The collision left 5-year-old Ariel Young hospitalized in critical condition with bleeding and swelling in her brain. Her 4-year-old cousin was also reportedly seriously injured in the crash.
“We remain in the process of gathering information on the incident and we will continue to assist local authorities as requested,” a Chiefs statement reads.
Ariel’s aunt Tiffany Verhulst set up a GoFundMe page to assist Ariel’s mother Felicia Miller with medical bills and other costs related to the crash. An update from Verhulst on Tuesday stated that Ariel remains unconscious and in critical condition.
Reid’s history of substance, driving issues
Reid, 35, also required surgery due to injuries he suffered in the crash. He did not accompany the Chiefs to Tampa for Sunday’s Super Bowl.
Reid has a history of substance abuse struggles and spent five months in jail in 2007 after pleading guilty in a Philadelphia road-rage incident that saw him point a gun at another driver while in possession of a controlled substance. He also pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in a separate 2007 incident incident.
Reid has worked for his father’s Chiefs in various coaching capacities since 2013. He also worked on his father’s staff when Andy was the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Reid has not been charged and remains under investigation for last week’s crash as officials await the results of a toxicology report.
