Chiefs’ Andy Reid announces promotions, hires youngest son to team’s strength staff

Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid announced promotions and additions to his staff Friday — and the newcomers include one of his former players and his youngest son.

Todd Pinkston, who played for Reid as a receiver with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2000-04, will be the Chiefs’ new running backs coach after serving as Austin Peay’s receivers coach last season. Pinkston replaces Greg Lewis — another former Reid wideout with the Eagles — who took the receivers coach job with the Baltimore Ravens earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Spencer Reid — Andy’s youngest son — was hired as an assistant strength coach. He spent last season as a strength coach on BYU football’s staff and previously worked with Colorado State football’s strength department.

It’s not the first time Andy Reid has hired one of his sons to the Chiefs’ staff; his son, Britt, was a KC assistant from 2013-20, which included a three-year stint as defensive line coach. Britt was sentenced to three years in prison in November for driving while intoxicated and causing a 2021 crash that severely injured a 5-year-old girl.

The Chiefs also will have a new head strength and conditioning coach. Barry Rubin announced his retirement after 10 years with the team, and Ryan Reynolds — a former assistant strength coach with the Chiefs — was promoted to take his place.

Among position coaches, KC also made some notable changes on offense. Joe Bleymaier will move from receivers coach to pass game coordinator, while Connor Embree — a former Kansas football player — will move up from offensive quality control to receivers coach.

Reid previously announced the promotion of Matt Nagy from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator and David Girardi from pass game analyst/assistant quarterbacks coach to QBs coach.

Other changes to KC’s staff: Porter Ellett moved from offensive quality control to assistant running backs coach; Kevin Saxton was added as an offensive assistant after working at Benedict (South Carolina) College; Dan Williams moved from offensive assistant to offensive quality control/assistant quarterbacks coach; and Nick Cassetta was hired as an assistant strength and conditioning after previously working with New Mexico State football.

“I’m excited to see what these coaches can do in their new roles,” Reid said in a statement Friday. “They are all talented individuals with unique skillsets. All of them have the ability to bring something different to the table to benefit our team and specifically our players.”
