The Chevrolet Camaro is moving on up from the Xfinity Series.

Chevy revealed Thursday that the Camaro would be the car model of choice for the Cup Series in 2018. The automaker is currently labeling its cars as the SS model but will switch to the type of car that’s currently in the Xfinity Series.

The Camaro moved to the Xfinity Series in 2013 replacing the Impala. Chevy becomes the first of the three Cup Series manufacturers to run a sports car model name in the modern Cup Series. Ford currently fields the Fusion and Toyota fields the Camry.

The car certainly looks better than the SS, which never really looked too intimidating on the race track. And running a Camaro is certainly better than an Impala.

While NASCAR cars are far from stock cars at this point and interest in American car models may be lower than it was 50 years ago, it does seem important that the biggest auto racing series in the country will now include a muscle car model.
