Chenango Valley swimmers pace Section 4 at NYSPHSAA boys swimming prelims

Chenango Valley seniors Tyler Schultz and Amir Sadykov advanced to championship finals during preliminaries Friday at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Boys Swimming & Diving Championships at Ithaca College.

Schultz advanced to the championship race in the 200-yard individual medley and 100 breaststroke. Sadykov made it in the 100 backstroke.

They were part of Chenango Valley's 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relays that advanced to consolation finals.

Swim finals get started at 10 a.m. Saturday at IC's Kelsey Partridge Bird Natatorium, with 10-swimmer championship races following bonus and consolation races for the 11 events.

Tickets are digital only and are available from gofan.co/app/school/NYSPHSAA. Sales are divided into separate sessions for swim prelims, diving and swim finals. Cost is $11.50 per session.

Schultz opened his day with a time of 1 minute, 52.02 seconds in the IM, fourth-fastest overall. Erik Nadecki of Section 1's Horace Greeley was first in 1:50.14. Schultz lowered his own school record, dropping 0.61 of a second off his seed time.

The time for Schultz in the 100 breaststroke was 57.04 seconds, which ranked fourth overall and third among public schools. Max Buchen of Section 11's Westhampton Beach was fastest in 55.13, with Nadecki second in 55.97. Schultz is the Section 4 record-holder in the breaststroke, topping his own record earlier this season with a time of 56.88 seconds.

Schultz joined Sadykov, Fin Dolaway and Gabe Tallant in producing the 11th-fastest time in the 200 medley relay (1:37.40) to qualify for the consolation finals.

Those same four will swim in the consolation finals of the 400 freestyle relay after their 14th-ranked time of 3:17.59.

Last year Schultz placed seventh overall in New York in both the breaststroke and IM.

Sadykov advances in backstroke

Sadykov tied for seventh in the backstroke prelims with a time of 52.03 seconds. Aaron Mendoza of St. Anthony's, a Catholic school, topped the field in 50.38 seconds.

Sadykov ranked 11th among 50 freestyle qualifiers with a time of 21.34 seconds. That puts him in the consolation race, but he remains in podium contention as one of the top-10 public schools qualifiers.
