Chelsea vs Paris FC LIVE: Women’s Champions League result and reaction as Sam Kerr leads Blues to big win

Chelsea secured their first victory of this season’s Women’s Champions League in an emphatic win over Paris FC at Stamford Bridge. Needing a positive result after being held to a draw against Real Madrid last time out, the Blues took the lead through Sam Kerr on the half hour mark. Chelsea’s captain for the night poking home Lauren James’ threaded pass into the box.

Eight minutes later Paris responded. Thea Graboval leaping into the air from a corner to float the ball over Ann-Katrin Berger and send the visitors into the break on level terms.

Berger made up for that goal by denying Mathilde Bourdieu early in the second half before Kerr poked the Blues ahead two minutes later. She completed her hat-trick by chipping the ball over the goalkeeper and opening up a comfortable lead for the hosts.

There was more to come though as Sophie Ingle came off the bench, met a corner ball with a volley in stoppage time and slotted her effort into the far bottom corner. Chelsea remain second in the group but they’re back to winning ways in Europe.

Hat-trick hero Sam Kerr leads from the front as Chelsea emphatically beat Paris in Champions League

22:58 , Mike Jones

Chelsea eased to a comfortable 4-1 win against Paris FC as Sam Kerr’s hat-trick helped them to a first women’s Champions League victory of the season.

The result had looked in doubt at half-time after the visitors had stunned Emma Hayes’ side with an equaliser from defender Thea Greboval’s header, wiping out the lead given to last year’s semi-finalists when Kerr turned in Lauren James’ cross.

But two goals early in the second period settled Chelsea nerves and ensured there would be no upset from the tournament debutants at Stamford Bridge. Kerr grabbed her second and third in the space of seven minutes before substitute Sophie Ingle capped the night off in stoppage time to ensure three points after last week’s controversial draw away to Real Madrid.

Chelsea midfielder Sophie Ingle on DAZN: “That is what is great about our team: when someone drops out someone is ready to come in. Millie [Bright] is a big loss though.

“Training is tough every single but that is why people are ready to come in. You’re playing against top players every day.

“I don’t score many goals but it is great to score from a set piece on this European night.”

Reaction from Chelsea boss Emma Hayes who said: “First of all, you know how hard it is to play back-to-back-to-back. I didn’t think we looked super fresh. I felt like we lacked a player closer to Sam Kerr in the first half so I brought on Fran Kirby and I felt that worked really well. Fran’s little bit of quality gave us what we needed.

“I thought we looked leggy generally. It was a quiet changing room at half-time. Credit to my team, they dug in despite us looking sloppy at times. They are a good team, don’t take anything away from them. To score four goals, and dig in, that is why I was impressed with my team.

“I didn’t feel concerned. I just knew at half-time if I could adjust a few things and get some control in the central pocket, I always feel like there’s goals in us. It was just a night where we needed to dig a little bit deep.

“I felt like we needed Sophie Ingle’s experience in the second half. She came in and calmed the game down for us. That is what she brings but I am also developing players at the same time. We’ve got another game in three days and Sophie will play.”

Chelsea are still without a defeat after their opening seven Women’s Super League games they’ve added two unbeaten matches in the Champions League too.

That’s nine games unbeaten in all competitions for Emma Hayes’s side to kick off their season. What a start.

Chelsea striker Sam Kerr speaking on DAZN: “The first half was difficult. They are a hard team to break down. Once we cleaned up our passes and upped our level a little bit we helped ourselves out. They are a tough team to break down.

“It is difficult. It is just part of my game, the number nine in most teams needs to stay switched on and be ready. When I’m not at my full fitness it is difficult but it is OK.

“Fran [Kirby] has had an amazing career and we know what she’s done for Chelsea. She added a different spark tonight.

“I felt like I was lucky with my first touch for my hat-trick goal but then I saw her back-pedalling so I thought I’d try the lob. I don’t mind those ones to be honest!

“I am getting really close to 100%. I just need more consistency, more training and more games. This last block has been difficult because you don’t train that often. I am pretty close but I’m not quite there yet.

“I asked what score the Hacken-Madrid game was when I came off!”

What that victory means is that Chelsea remain second in Group D but open up a three point lead over Real Madrid who lost to Hacken tonight.

Hacken are still at the top of the table and will take on Emma Hayes’ side next in what should be a barnstorming contest. Those two fixtures could determine which team finishes top of the group.

90+5 mins: Chelsea get their win.

After the disappointment of drawing with Real Madrid last week, Emma Hayes’ side were determined to set their Women’s Champions League campaign going under the lights at Stamford Bridge.

A well fought first half saw the teams evenly matched with Thea Graboval cancelling out Sam Kerr’s opener to send the teams into the break on level terms.

After Paris failed to take the lead early in the second half, Chelsea stepped on the gas. Kerr added two more goal in quick successive to open up a cushion and from there the Blues were never in danger.

Sophie Ingle came off the bench to add a fourth in injury time but the most important thing is Chelsea pick up all three points.

She hits it quite well but sends the effort into the hands of Ann-Katrin Berger.

Chelsea 3-1 Paris FC

21:40 , Mike Jones

85 mins: Kadeisha Buchanan picks up a yellow card for a late tackle and Emma Hayes wastes no time in managing the game.

With Millie Bright injured, Buchanan has a big role to play in central defence so Hayes hooks the defender and brings on Maren Mjelde in her place.

Smart move.

Chelsea 3-1 Paris FC

82 mins: Paris FC make a double change as the match enters the final 10 minutes. Teninsoun Sissoko and Julie Dufour go off with Kessya Bussy and Celina Ould Hocine coming on.

Julie Dufour arrives into space and hooks a shot at goal but Ann-Katrin Berger is up to the task of palming the ball over the crossbar!

21:28 , Mike Jones

70 mins: 20 minutes or so to play at Stamford Bridge. Paris are awarded a free kick inside Chelsea’s half but are annoyed as they had the ball around the edge of the box and wanted to play the advantage.

Even worse, Chelsea defend the free kick without too much trouble.

Chelsea 3-1 Paris FC

21:24 , Mike Jones

67 mins: Nearly! Rytting Kaneryd goes on a wonderful run down the right wing before sending the ball across to Fran Kirby. Kirby plays a first time pass over to the far side of the box where Sam Kerr arrives.

The forward doesn’t shift her weight correctly and scuffs her shot, sending it wide of the nearest post. Another fine opportunity for Chelsea there.

Chelsea 3-1 Paris FC

21:20 , Mike Jones

64 mins: Chance! Lousie Fleury has been brought on to replace Mathilde Bourdieu for Paris. She gets an opportunity to score immediately after drifting into space in the box.

The forward shoots first time but lifts her effort over the crossbar!

Chelsea 3-1 Paris FC

21:16 , Mike Jones

61 mins: Sophie Ingle is introduced into proceedings now and comes on to replace Sjoeke Rusken in the Chelsea midfield. Ingle is a stalward performer for Chelsea and should marshall the rest of this game well for the hosts.

Chelsea 3-1 Paris FC

21:15 , Mike Jones

58 mins: Chelsea have come out swinging in this second half. They should have gone behind early on but responded brilliantly and the clinical nature of Sam Kerr has given them a comfortable lead.

GOAL! Chelsea 3-1 Paris FC (Kerr, 55’)⚽️

21:13 , Mike Jones

55 mins: Hat-trick!

The ball is booted long and Teninsoun Sissoko is worried about Sam Kerr. Rightly so.

The defender fails to deal with the ball and the Chelsea captain brings it under control, nips to the right and darts into space. She spies that Chiamaka Nnadozie is off her line and chips the ball over the goalkeeper.

Nnadozie scrambles backwards and flaps at the dropping ball. She can’t clear it and the end result is a third goal for the Australian forward!

Chelsea 2-1 Paris FC

21:08 , Mike Jones

51 mins: Sam Kerr is the first player to score three goals in this season’s Women’s Champions League after also netting away at Real Madrid last week.

Chelsea 1-1 Paris FC

21:04 , Mike Jones

46 mins: Save! Paris should be ahead.

They play through Chelsea and run the ball to the edge of the box. It’s quickly squared to Mathilde Bourdieu who skips away from Kadeisha Buchanan and pings a shot at goal.

Second half! Chelsea 1-1 Paris FC

Fran Kirby has been introduced at half-time by Emma Hayes. She replaces Jessie Fleming and will try to give the Blues more control in the middle of the pitch.

1-1 seems to be a fair score at half-time. Chelsea haven’t been able to totally control the game with Paris repeatedly showing their quality in the final third.

The Blues created five chances with three on target in that half with Paris managing four and two on target. It’s a close game.

It goes over Ann-Katrin Berger and dips underneath the bar where Jess Carter is trying to cover her goalkeeper. She attempts to clear the danger but only manages to head the ball onto the underside of the crossbar and it rebounds into the back of the net.

Chelsea 1-0 Paris FC

20:38 , Mike Jones

36 mins: Paris have stepped up their game since going behind. They’re piling pressure on Chelsea’s left side with Julie Soyer playing in an advanced role to creat more space for the forward players to target the box.

The visitors win themselves a corner.

Chelsea 1-0 Paris FC

20:35 , Mike Jones

33 mins: Save! Sam Kerr is fed the ball on the edge of the box again but this time lays it across to Johanna Rytting Kaneryd.

The winger darts in from the right, opens up her body and shoots only for Chiamaka Nnadozie to stick out a hand and palm the ball wide of the far post!

Huge save.

GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Paris FC (Kerr, 30’)⚽️

20:32 , Mike Jones

Chelsea take the lead and break the deadlock. Jess Carter finds Lauren James on the left wing. She cuts inside, weaves in between a couple of defenders then dinks the ball into the box.

Chelsea 0-0 Paris FC

20:30 , Mike Jones

27 mins: Chelsea work the ball up to Sjoeke Rusken on the left side of the pitch and she flicks one round the corner to pick out Johanna Rytting Kaneryd on the right edge of the box.

The winger takes too long to shift the ball out from her feet and Paris reorganise quickly. They keep her out of the penalty area and force the Blues to retreat.

Chelsea 0-0 Paris FC

20:26 , Mike Jones

24 mins: No-one inside, or out of, the stadium can believe that Lauren James missed that chance. It’s a sign that Chelsea are growing into the game after a little spell when Paris were on top.

Chelsea 0-0 Paris FC

20:23 , Mike Jones

21 mins: Oh my days.

That is a shocker from Lauren James. Erin Cuthbert receives the ball on the right side of the pitch and threads a pass across to Sam Kerr.

Kerr draws in the nearest centre-backs but lets the ball run through to James. She’s one-on-one with the goalkeeper and looks to curl the ball into the top right corner.

She has to score but gets her effort all wrong and pushes the ball well wide of the post.

Chelsea 0-0 Paris FC

20:20 , Mike Jones

18 mins: A wonderful ball over the top drops for Sam Kerr who touches it into the box. She’s tracked well and as Kerr checks back inside to roll the ball onto her right foot she’s tackled and Paris boot the loose ball clear.

Chelsea 0-0 Paris FC

20:18 , Mike Jones

15 mins: Every time the ball comes into the central areas for Chelsea, Paris press high up the pitch and try to recover the ball.

They’re making it difficult for the Blues to play through the middle of the park and it’s allowing them a fari bit of joy in the home side’s half of the pitch.

Chelsea 0-0 Paris FC

20:15 , Mike Jones

12 mins: Close! The ball is sent down the right wing and gets flicked into the box by Thiney. Mathilde Bourdieu collects the ball and turns towards goal.

Chelsea 0-0 Paris FC

20:09 , Mike Jones

6 mins: Thiney is getting really stuck into this match. She shuffles across and shoulders Niamh Charles off the ball forcing it out of play for a Paris throw in.

The visitors feed the ball through the middle of the pitch and slip and nice pass into the feet of Clara Mateo. Mateo weaves into the penalty and loses possession.

She goes down looking for a penalty but the referee lets play go on and there are a few boos from the ground for the ease at which Mateo hit the deck.

Evidently the Chelsea supporters remember the soft penalty that Real Madrid earned against them last week.

Chelsea 0-0 Paris FC

20:05 , Mike Jones

3 mins: Lauren James brings the ball down the left-hand channel before laying it off to Erin Cuthbert. Cuthbert energetically shuffles her way up to the box before flicking the ball across to Niamh Charles who makes an overlapping run.

Chelsea ‘robbed’ by ‘embarrassing’ referee in Real Madrid draw, fumes Emma Hayes

19:30 , Mike Jones

Emma Hayes felt her Chelsea side had been “robbed” after they were held 2-2 at Real Madrid in their Women’s Champions League opener.

In a contest with no VAR in operation, Real equalised through a 79th-minute Olga Carmona penalty awarded by referee Frida Klarlund for a Jessie Fleming challenge on Athenea del Castillo – which Hayes had no doubt took place outside the box.

The Chelsea manager was also unhappy about Niamh Charles’ finish being disallowed in stoppage time, seemingly for offside, stressing that Charles had been onside and Sam Kerr had not interfered with goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez.
