'Who are the Chefs?' Kansas City coach Andy Reid asks in Snickers commercial reboot

Even before Taylor Swift got on the Kansas City Chiefs' bandwagon, team players and coach Andy Reid were omnipresent on TV – in commercials, not just as part of broadcast NFL games.

MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been in several commercials for State Farm Insurance and Subway, as well as others for T-Mobile and Head & Shoulders shampoo.

All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce has been the "overly direct" football ambassador for DirecTV (and was joined in commercials by All-Pro defensive end Chris Jones), as well spreading the message that you can get a COVID booster and flu shot at the same time in a recent ad for Pfizer. He and brother Jason Kelce, and their mother Donna, have been in Campbell Soup commercials; Kelce also appeared recently in a new State Farm commercial with Mahomes.

And, of course, Kelce and Swift both appeared on Saturday Night Live this past weekend.

But back to the Chiefs coach, who often appears with Mahomes in State Farm ads – he's most recently seen attempting to swipe Mahomes' chicken nuggets.

'Great googly moogly'

The coach steps out on his own in a new Snickers commercial, which may bring back some memories. That's because it's a reimaging of a 1996 commercial in which a groundskeeper painting the team's name in the end zone misspells it as "Chefs."

In the original commercial, a player says to the groundskeeper, who is admiring his work, "That's great, but who are the Chefs?" When the groundskeeper realizes his mistake, he says, "Great googly moogly," and grabs a Snickers because, as the voiceover says, "Not going anywhere for a while? Grab a Snickers."

In the new version, Reid puts his arm on the groundskeeper's shoulder and says, "Hey, that's great. But who are the Chefs?"

The voiceover says, "Rookie mistake?" and then Reid is heard saying, "Great googly moogly."

After the voiceover, says, "Maybe you just need a Snickers" and the groundskeeper is showing eating one of the candy bars. The point of view shifts back to Reid and the groundskeeper, who is tilting his head looking at the end zone. "Eh, maybe no one will notice," Reid says.

The ongoing media coverage the Chiefs have gotten, the franchise's 2023 Super Bowl win, and the candy bar's partnership with the Chiefs and the NFL led the Snickers brand overseers to remake the commercial, which fits with their Rookie Mistake Campaign, a spokesperson told USA TODAY.

The commercial is on the Snickers YouTube channel and its Instagram page and will be aired this month on traditional TV and digital channels.
