Cheboygan soccer generates chances, but settles for tie in home clash with Houghton Lake

CHEBOYGAN – The opportunities were there – plenty of them.

But the Cheboygan girls soccer team could never find the breakthrough goal it craved and had to settle for a 0-0 tie against Houghton Lake in a Northern Michigan Soccer League clash on Tuesday.

Despite a sluggish first half, the Chiefs (6-2-1, 6-2-1 NMSL) improved in the second half and saw one of their shots go off the post while a few others were near misses. Defensively, Cheboygan showed strength by shutting out the Bobcats (1-7-2, 1-7-2).

Cheboygan will have arguably its toughest matchup of the season when it welcomes unbeaten McBain Northern Michigan Christian (10-0-0, 8-0-0) for a 5 p.m. league matchup on Thursday. It will be parents night in Cheboygan.

Cheboygan will host its cancer awareness game against Oscoda at 5 p.m., Wednesday, May 8. Cheboygan players will honor someone who has, had or is battling cancer. All proceeds from the game will benefit Brian Brandau.

When Cheboygan hosts Gladwin on Friday, May 17, it will be senior night for the Chiefs.

Ecker, Sidlauskas lead Chiefs track at Webb Morrison invite

PICKFORD – The Cheboygan track and field teams saw several athletes medal at the Webb Morrison Invitational in Pickford on Saturday, April 27.

Bella Ecker’s first places in the long jump (13-3.5) and high jump (4-10) led the Cheboygan girls, who earned third. The 4X400 relay team of Olivia Patrick, Samantha Bailey, Cloee Rupp and Ecker took first with a time of 4:46.75.

Second places went to Joyce Ormsbee in the shot put (32-9.5), the 4X100 relay (Ecker, Patrick, Abbey Zilla, Piper Stead, 57.40) and the 4X200 relay (Bailey, Friday, Stead, Zilla, 2:01.35), while Bailey took third and fourth respectively in the 100 hurdles (19.60) and 300 hurdles (55.59). Andalee Bailey and Nola Ecker tied for fourth in the pole vault (6-0). Zilla was fifth in the long jump (11-11.5).

LUCAS SIDLAUSKAS: Sidlauskas making his mark as elite thrower on Cheboygan boys track and field team

For the Cheboygan boys, who also took third, Lucas Sidlauskas finished first in the discus (143-5) and second in the shot put (43-1.5). Kelsey Lamb was second in the long jump (16-5.5), Evan Benson was second in the pole vault (11-6), and the 4X100 relay team of Lamb, Leland Steffen, Ashton Goga and Jacob Baiel was second at 50.42. Evan Fradette was third in the 3,200 (13:36), Lamb took fourth in the 200 (25.74), Leland Brendle placed fifth in the 300 hurdles (51.50) and Steffen earned fifth in the pole vault (9-6).
