Cheboygan girls bowling, Luke Marsh win NMBC titles; Inland Lakes sends two wrestlers to states

ROGERS CITY – The Cheboygan girls bowling team wrapped up an eighth consecutive Northern Michigan Bowling Conference championship by claiming a 23-7 victory over Gaylord at Rogers City on Saturday.

The Chiefs (7-0-1) were led by Lily McKervey (224, 154), Izzy Taylor (190, 129), Ellie Kennedy (153, 145), Kaitlyn Campbell (148, 132) and Faythe Roll (124, 116).

Earning all-conference honors were Kennedy (168 average) and Taylor (155.3).

On the boys side, Luke Marsh secured the individual NMBC title by recording a 205 average.

Marsh (232, 197) led the Cheboygan boys (6-4), who suffered a 21-9 loss to Gaylord in their conference finale. Jake Pluszcynski (201, 174), Jesse Harbison (172, 125), David Ramsby (156, 136), Griffin Wiley (153) and Deegan Schoenith (134) also represented Cheboygan in the match.

The Cheboygan bowling teams will host a MHSAA Division 3 regional meet at Spare Time Lanes on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-24.

Hanel, Carper qualify for Division 4 finals

CHARLEVOIX – It was a strong day for Inland Lakes wrestlers Wyatt Hanel and Gus Carper, who qualified for the MHSAA Division 4 state finals at regionals in Charlevoix on Saturday.

Hanel, a sophomore, finished second in the 126-pound weight division to qualify. Hanel reached the finals by pinning Houghton’s Mason Langlois and Iron Mountain’s Di’Angelo Saldana in his first two matches. Hanel’s only loss came in the title match, an 8-3 setback to Iron Mountain’s Tyler Winch.

Only a freshman, Carper qualified at 132 pounds by earning a pair of victories. Despite losing his opening bout, Carper battled back to win his next two, which sent him to the third-place match and earned him qualification into the finals.

The individual state finals will take place at Ford Field in Detroit on Friday and Saturday, March 1-2.
