Chavez, Flores honored for bilingual high school sports radio broadcasting

Two radio sports broadcast pioneers from South Texas were recognized Friday at Cabaniss Baseball Field prior to the start of the game between London and Veterans Memorial.

Adan Chavez and Dr. Manuel Flores, two long-time educators in South Texas, called bilingual broadcasts for KUNO-AM in Corpus Christi, doing more than 150 high school games across South Texas.

The duo was honored by the Texas State Legislature this past session with a proclamation from Robstown state representative Abel Herrero. The broadcasts were in English with Spanish highlights, and also included interviews in English and Spanish.

“It is a pleasure to honor these two broadcast pioneers,” Herrero said in a release. “Their contribution to South Texas baseball lore and legend is significant. They broadcasted not only non-district games but playoffs, including several state championship games.”

Chavez and Flores are the only known broadcast team in Texas do a bilingual format for high school games from 1987-2007.

Chavez is a long-time teacher, coach and administrator for Corpus Christi ISD. Flores is a retired professor of journalism from Texas A&M-Kingsville and former sports reporter with the Caller-Times.
