One of the most memorable seasons in South Carolina men’s basketball history is slowly coming to a close.

The Gamecocks will wrap up their 2023-24 regular season Saturday at Mississippi State at Humphrey Coliseum in Starkville, Mississippi. Under second-year coach Lamont Paris, South Carolina has orchestrated one of the most dramatic turnarounds in college basketball this season. Picked to finish in last place in the SEC on the heels of an 11-21 finish in 2022-23, the Gamecocks enter Saturday’s contest at 24-6 overall, 12-5 in conference play and No. 16 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

South Carolina is just two wins shy of matching the program single-season record for victories in a season, set by the school’s 2016-17 team that won 26 games on its way to the Final Four.

It will be the second meeting against Mississippi State this season for the Gamecocks, who fell earlier in the week at home against No. 4 Tennessee. South Carolina won its first matchup against the Bulldogs, defeating them 68-62 on Jan. 6 at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia.

Mississippi State had been one of the hottest teams in the SEC for much of February, riding a five-game win streak that took it from the NCAA Tournament bubble to comfortably into the 68-team field. Since then, however, it has lost its past three games, including a 75-69 defeat Wednesday against a reeling Texas A&M team.
