After a couple of record-setting warmup games against lower-level competition, the UTEP men's basketball team tips off the meat of its non-conference schedule Monday with a showdown against reigning Big West champion Cal-Santa Barbara at the Don Haskins Center.
This nationally televised game (CBS Sports Network) is UTEP's designated 915 game, as it looks to sell out the Haskins Center.

This is the Miners' first game against a Division I opponent and they picked a good one. The Gauchos went 27-8 last year on the way to winning the Big West regular and postseason titles and an NCAA tournament berth.
They were without reigning Big West player of the year, guard Ajay Mitchell, in their Thursday opener and lost to Portland State. Mitchell's status for UTEP is unknown but he was suited up in the opener and the Miners expect him to play.
"The key is, it's our first time against a real opponent," coach Joe Golding said. "Composure. We have to have a great home crowd that brings a ton of energy. We have to force turnovers somehow, we have to get out and get some easy baskets.
"I think the key is us being us: Turn them over, have a low turnover game on our part, get some easy baskets and rebound the basketball."
The other key is containing Mitchell.

"We have to control him, which is hard because he scores and he gets other guys involved. You can't let him do both. They have the Auburn transfer (6-11 forward Yohan Traore) who's a five-star kid, they have two good shooters around him, they have (forward Ariel Bland) inside who's a toughness guy, I love him, a blue-collar guy.
"They are a great team, this is a great opportunity for our program. You want to play against teams like this, this is what you play college basketball for."
