Inter Milan vs Atletico Madrid LIVE: Latest Champions League result and reaction including PSV vs Dortmund

The Uefa Champions League continued with its last-16 ties getting underway on Tuesday evening, with a double bill in Italy and Netherlands taking centre stage.

At the San Siro, Serie A league leaders Inter Milan narrowly beat LaLiga outfit Atletico Madrid, with Marko Arnautovic’s second-half goal the only strike of the game. Elsewhere, PSV Eindhoven held Borussia Dortmund to a 1-1 draw, Luuk de Jong levelling from the penalty spot after Donyell Malen scored for the visitors against his former club.

Inter Milan a 1-0 Atletico Madrid

A late goal from substitute Marko Arnautovic gave Inter Milan a 1-0 home victory against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday.

The Austria striker, who replaced the injured Marcus Thuram at halftime, redeemed himself after several missed chances by squeezing the ball home after Lautaro Martinez’s shot was saved by goalkeeper Jan Oblak in the 79th minute.

Ahead of the interval Martinez and Thuram had opportunities to break the deadlock for Inter but faced a resilient defence, with chances either blocked or saved by Oblak.

Just after the hour mark the home crowd had expressed their frustration as Arnautovic found himself free in front of goal but sent his effort over the crossbar.

The return leg in Spain is on March 13.

It’s Atletico’s first defeat in Europe this season, but there’s a lot to play for in the second leg, no doubt.

Frattesi goes down after a tackle by Barrios. Koke is booked for another foul. Inter commit a few into the box but the delivery is poor - not a great game from Barella tonight in honesty.

Morata loses his footing inside the box and Inter counter again but it peters out and they are all looking rather tired now.

Morata booked for a foul. Frattesi follows him. All very ragged and fragmented now as Atleti push forward and Inter look to counter into spaces.

A deep ball to the far post looks for Morata but he can’t get enough on it and Simeone collapses to his knees.

Lautaro Martinez is replaced by Alexis Sanchez for the final minutes.

Savic is booked for about his fiftieth foul of the second half. Atleti try to push forward quickly after conceding that goal and Lino lashes a shot wide from range.

Inter counter and briefly have an overload but Barella can’t take the ball in his stride and the chance is gone.

A misplaced pass lets Lautaro Martinez in on goal, he should square but takes it on himself, Oblak saves once again but this time Arnautovic is on the rebound and rattles it in first time - via the defender who is on the line! Lino almost stops it but not quite and Inter are ahead!

There’s the delivery Martinez has been waiting for - a ball from the right finds him on the run and his header is on target, but Oblak is down quickly to make a sure-handed save to his right.

Well inside the final quarter of an hour now and we remain goalless - Inter surely have to press for a winner here on home soil. Atletico are excellent at home.

Dumfries for Darmian in a like-for-like Inter change. Both teams giving the ball away with some ridiculous passing in this half - it has been very low quality overall. Now Mkhitaryan is replacedd by Davide Frattesi.

Arnautovic almost has another opening as a cross reaches him at the near post, but a combination of the speed of the ball and a defender in close attendance denies him a clear finish.

Are we going to get a goal? Morata goes down in the box under a bump from Arnautovic but there’s no foul there or much connection even.

Another massive chance - Arnautovic has to score. A one-two sets him free inside the box and the Austrian is in - but blazes his shot over the bar with Oblak down on the ground and surely beaten.

The fans groan, Arnautovic raises his eyes skyward.

Witsel is down injured, meanwhile.

Llorente races through and gets there just about in time - De Vrij makes the tackle, clears the ball against the Atleti man and then he’s clattered in turn by Sommer. At least two of them hurt in that three-way collision, but all good to continue.

From the corner, Griezmann finds only the hands of Sommer. A little more forward-thinking impetus from the visitors, at least.

Another Arnautovic effort - this time he heads off target. Barella touches the ball around the corner and is clattered from behind - yellow card for Hermoso and some attention needed for the Italian midfielder.

Morata comes on now for Saul Niguez, second sub for Atleti. Morata has had a knock but he has five Champions League goals this season.

Big chance early on in the half for Arnautovic, almost his first touch - Oblak gets down just about in time and does enough to close out the angle. Fine move from the home side in the buildup to that effort.

Atleti made a change at the break too - Stefan Savic on for Gimenez who had a knock.

Witsel gives the ball away again and Thuram and Latuaro break away. Barella eventually tees up Thuram for a snapshot but it’s again at Oblak who saves - Atletico getting away with some shoddy passing at the moment.

French forward Thuram is currently down and getting some treatment.

Massive chance. Inter should be ahead. A Rodrigo free-kick is intercepted by Thuram, then he beats Witsel to the loose ball and squares to Lautaro - but Martinez fails to either shoot first time or take a good touch, then scuffs his shot straight into a defender and it rolls wide. That, in the context of this game and tie, is a real waste.

We’re five minutes before half time.

It’s still PSV 0-1 Dortmund in the other game, but the hosts have been pushing again with a couple of chances as we approach the interval.

Worth noting that Alvaro Morata is missing for Atletico tonight - he’s the joint-top scorer in the Champions League with five so far, though teammate Antoine Griezmann also has five so they are not lacking for firepower all the same.

After that pair though, the next highest scorers for tonight’s teams are Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi and Inter’s Alexis Sanchez, with neither starting. Both have two.

Inter finished second in Group D behind Real Sociedad on head to head, while Atletico Madrid topped Group E, four points clear of Lazio and unbeaten.

As for opponents Borussia Dortmund, they are similar to Atletico in terms of being in a battle to finish in the top four in their league.

The Bundesliga is typically tight around the top, with BVB fourth, just a point ahead of Leipzig but five points behind third-placed Stuttgart.

A good run of form of late sees Edin Terzic’s side unbeaten in nine, though they have probably drawn too many of them for the manager’s liking.

So, onto that game: PSV are runaway leaders in the Eredivisie and are in fact unbeaten in the Dutch league all year - they have a ten point lead over Feyenoord and have only lost twice in all competitions this term.

As for Atletico, it’s not quite as impressive this time around for Diego Simeone and co. Indeed, while they are in the top four still, it’s a fight in LaLiga to ensure Champions League football next term - and Girona being five points ahead of them is a bit of an indictment over their inconsistencies.

Atleti are fourth, with a two-point buffer to Athletic Club in fifth, but they are also 11 points behind leaders Real Madrid.

They are in the semis of the Copa del Rey, but lost the first leg 1-0 to Athletic so there’s much work to do on all fronts to not have 23/24 be a disappointing campaign.

Let’s focus first on Inter vs Atletico and how the sides are faring this year.

For the Italians, it’s a big year which could be spectacular. They sit top of Serie A and after beating both Juventus and Roma recently, have a nine-point lead over second-placed Juve.

They really should go on and seal the title from here with 14 games left to play - but they’ll also be eyeing further progression in this competition. Simone Inzaghi has done a very good job indeed this term, at least in terms of results.
