CBS Sports lists Texas, Iowa State as most overrated teams in college football

College football isn’t officially here until Texas is called overrated.

For the most part, it’s for good reason. The Longhorns don’t have much to show for over the last several seasons other than a few bowl wins. However, there’s no doubt that they have high level talent on the roster.

The college football world will be watching to see if first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian and his staff will be the ones to finally put the puzzle pieces together. After all, the sport as a whole is better when Texas is good. They’re similar to the Yankees and Cowboys of the world. Even when they’re not producing results on the field, the brand is incredibly strong.

Many would agree that Texas being placed at No. 21 in the AP Poll is a realistic spot. Not too high, not too low. But according to CBS Sports, Texas has a ways to go before becoming a legitimate contender. Dennis Dodd isn’t even sure if they should be ranked heading into the 2021 season, which is why he labeled the Longhorns as one of the most overrated teams.

This is not a prediction, it’s a habit. Texas has finished unranked five of the last 10 seasons. If it thinks football will be easier in the SEC, it’s mistaken. It can’t even win the Big 12. Steve Sarkisian was the best name on the board, but he doesn’t have a Heisman Trophy winner, Unitas Award winner and Doak Walker winner to populate his offense. Even if the offense does break out with Bijan Robinson, the defense has distressingly underperformed. I’m having a hard time ranking Texas.

Texas was listed right behind Big 12 foe Iowa State in terms of the most overrated programs this season. While the Cyclones certainly have a talented squad under Matt Campbell, CBS Sports doesn’t believe they can best last season’s 9-3 record as they chase the sport’s elite teams.

Clemson, Notre Dame, and Michigan rounded out the five overrated teams. On the flip side, Penn State, Oregon, LSU, Boston College, and Utah were regarded as underrated teams to watch out for this year.
