CB Patrick Peterson says Steelers interest in him ‘came out of left field’
Early on the first day of unofficial free agency, the Pittsburgh Steelers lost a starting cornerback. But there was no panic by the Steelers front office as just a short time later they got a new one. It didn’t take long for Cameron Sutton to find a new home and a new contract with the Detroit Lions. But the Steelers acted quickly, getting eight-time Pro Bowler Patrick Peterson to take his place.
Peterson talked on his podcast that he was headed to Pittsburgh and how excited he was to play for coach Mike Tomlin. He said that no matter what, Tomlin always has his players prepared. Peterson also noted that he had not been in contact with the Steelers prior to this and that the signing “came out of left field.”
With Peterson in the fold, the Steelers have a strong pair of starting cornerbacks with him and Levi Wallace. You add in Arthur Maulet in the slot and the team is set for the season. Peterson is a man-coverage specialist and can move inside and outside in the formation. His experience and leadership will be invaluable after losing Sutton, who by all accounts was one of the smartest guys on the defensive side of the football.
