Cavaliers starting center Jarrett Allen suffers an ankle injury during a recent practice

Cavaliers starting center Jarrett Allen is dealing with an injury as the 2023-24 NBA season approaches.

The Cavs announced Saturday Allen has a left ankle bone bruise and will be re-evaluated in two weeks.

Allen underwent at MRI Friday at Cleveland Clinic Sports Health to confirm the nature of the injury, according to the Cavs.

Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff told reporters Allen's injury developed "over time" and had "kind of been building."

The Cavs began training camp practices Tuesday. They are scheduled to play their first of four preseason games Oct. 10 at the Atlanta Hawks. Their regular-season opener will be Oct. 25 at the Brooklyn Nets, Allen's former team.

Bickerstaff said Allen is expected to miss all of the Cavs' preseason games.

Asked whether he anticipates Allen will be able to play when the Cavs begin the regular season Oct. 25, Bickerstaff said, "That's my hope, but I can't give you an honest answer on that because it's bone, and everybody's different as far as how long those things take."

Here is the entire statement the Cavs released Saturday: "Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen sustained a left ankle bone bruise in practice recently. An MRI at Cleveland Clinic Sports Health yesterday confirmed the injury, and he will begin a period of treatment and rehabilitation. Allen will be re-evaluated in two weeks and his status will be updated as appropriate."
