Carlos Gómez robs Yankees of crucial home run with incredibly-timed leap
It was going to take more than whipping wind and falling rain at Yankee Stadium to slow down Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Carlos Gómez on Tuesday. In the sixth inning of New York’s 11-4 win, Gómez battled the elements to steal what would have been a crucial home run off the bat of Tyler Wade.
With the game tied 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth, Wade smacked a 93 mph fastball off Austin Pruitt to deep right. After getting out to an early lead, the Yankees had just allowed the Rays to come charging back to tie the game in the top of the inning. Off the bat, it looked as if Wade had put New York ahead once again. Enter Carlos Gómez.
Gómez was already playing pretty deep when Wade made contact. With his back to the wall, Gómez shuffled his feet, timed his jump perfectly and took a home run away from Wade.
It’s tough to tell with that mask across his face, but that is Carlos Gómez making the excellent play in the chilly weather.
In fact, we might say the only thing colder than the weather in New York on Tuesday was Gómez. It was awfully rude of him to rob Wade of a home run, but we don’t think he was too torn up about it.
