Cardinals will grant Zach Ertz's request for release

Veteran tight end Zach Ertz is about to be on the move.

Ertz's former Cardinals teammate J.J. Watt broke word that has since been confirmed by others that Ertz has requested and been granted his release in Arizona. Watt added that Ertz wants to sign with a Super Bowl contender, but he will be subject to waivers so it's not a sure thing that he'll get to choose his next destination.

There is about $2.5 million in salary left on Ertz's current contract and a claiming team would be on the hook for that cost.

Ertz has been on injured reserve with a quad injury since October 24. He had 27 catches for 187 yards and a touchdown before being sidelined.

The Eagles traded Ertz to the Cardinals in 2021 and have been short on tight ends with Dallas Goedert and Grant Calcaterra out with injuries, but it's not clear if they'd be looking for a reunion once Ertz is officially available to claim or sign.

UPDATE 12:54 p.m. ET: The Cardinals announced that they have waived Ertz.
