'Captain Nemo' Sailing Toward the Big Screen
Sony has a new film in the works centering on the famous fictional Captain Nemo, antihero of Jules Verne's novel, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
Nemo was also featured in Verne's sequel, The Mysterious Island, and popped up again in his play, Journey Through the Impossible. The character, a scientific genius, is best known for his deep sea explorations aboard The Nautilus, a submarine that was constructed on a deserted island.
The screenplay for the project was written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, known for their work on TV as creators of the series Smallville and on the big screen for action/fantasy films such as Spider-Man 2 and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
Captain Nemo, first introduced to readers in 1870, is hotter than ever at the moment, with more than one studio anxious to bring him back for a feature film. The character has remained popular over the years, memorably appearing in 2003's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and a number of other pictures. Disney, which based a theme park ride on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (it was retired from Disney World in the 1990s), is developing its own big-screen Nemo adaptation. David Fincher (The Social Network) was set to direct but quit over a budget dispute.
The plot for Sony's Captain Nemo is being kept under wraps, but we know it will offer audiences a new take on the stern, isolated leader. Producing the movie are Joe Roth and Palak Patel, the duo behind Angelina Jolie's hit film, Maleficent.
