CAPE LEAGUE ROUNDUP: Opening Day for Cape Cod Baseball League

The Cape Cod Baseball League opening day took place on Saturday and despite rainy weather all day, that included one postponement (Cotuit vs. Chatham). The nation's premier collegiate summer baseball league is celebrating 100 years this season.

Follow along to see the scores of the four games that did take place on Saturday, which featured the defending champion Bourne Braves on the road against the Brewster Whitecaps, in a rematch of last's year championship.

Brewster Whitecaps 6, Bourne Braves 4

The Cape League started off with a bang in the first game of the day. After two scoreless innings, Andrew Patrick (Wright State University) hit a home run at the top of the third inning to give Bourne a 1-0 lead. Vincent Cimini (Boston College) responded with a dinger of his own in the bottom of the third that tied the game 1-1. Both teams scored three runs over the next four innings and the game was knotted at 4-4 going into the eighth inning.

Will Turner (University of South Alabama) and Dylan Hoy (Marist College) each scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Brewster a 6-4 lead. Cimini finished 3-for-4 (scored run, two RBIs), while Hoy went 2-for-3 (two scored runs) for Brewster (1-0). On the mound, Joey DeChiaro (Old Dominion University) had the win as he went three innings and allowed no hits, and no walks while striking out one.

Bourne (0-1) pitcher Griffin Stieg (Virginia Tech) went 1⅔ innings, giving up three hits, three runs (two earned), two walks, and three strikeouts.

Harwich Mariners 4, Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox 3

The Mariners scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning and never looked back. They held the Red Sox scoreless until the top of the seventh inning thanks to pitchers Sam Armstrong (Old Dominion) and Joe Savino (Elon). Armstrong went four innings and allowed no hits, two walks, and struck out six. Savino picked up the win as he went 2⅔ innings and gave up five hits, an earned run, a walk, while striking out three. At the plate, Jackson Hornung (Skidmore College) went 1-for-3 (two runs, two RBIs) while Kenny Levari was 2-for-2 with an RBI for Harwich (1-0).

The Red Sox scored two runs in the final inning, but it was too little too late. Starting pitcher Khal Stephen (Purdue) allowed five hits, three earned runs, a walk, and struck out seven over four innings for Y-D (0-1).

Orleans Firebirds 4, Hyannis Harbor Hawks 1

With the Firebirds leading 2-1 in the top of the ninth, they tacked on two runs to put the game out of reach. Pitcher Riley Frey (Wisconsin Milwaukee) picked up the win as he went two innings, and allowed no hits or runs, and struck out two, while starting pitcher Daniel Avitia (Grand Canyon) went four innings allowing three hits, one unearned run, a walk, and struck out six for Orleans (1-0). Hyannis (0-1) starting pitcher Mitch Farris (Windgage University) went 3⅓ innings, allowing three hits, two earned runs, two walks and struck out six.

Wareham Gatemen 11, Falmouth Commodores 10

It was a high-scoring affair in the last game of the day. Wareham led 11-5 going into the bottom of the ninth inning. Falmouth scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth but came up just short of the comeback.

Daniel Frontera (Seton Hall) had the win on the mound. Frontera went three innings, allowing four hits, no runs, a walk, and struck out three for Wareham (1-0). At the plate, Sebastian Murillo (Georgia) finished 1-for-3 (two runs, two RBIs, two walks), Drake Digiorno (California Santa Barbara) was 2-for-4 (two runs, one RBI, one walk), while David Glancy (St. John's) went 1-for-4 (two runs, three RBIs, one walk) for the Gatemen.

Gavin Kilen (Louisville) went 1-for-4 (three RBIs, one scored run, one walk). Christian Martin (Virginia Tech) finished 3-for-5 (two RBIs, one scored run, one walk) for Falmouth (0-1). Charlie Condon (Georgia) was 2-for-6 (two RBIs, one scored run), while Tab Tracy (Texas A&M) went 2-for-3 (two scored runs, one RBI, two walks). Falmouth starting pitcher went two innings, allowing three hits, four runs (one earned), a walk, and struck out four, while Paul Bonzagni (Southern Illinois, Carbondale) went two innings, allowing no runs, one hit, no walks while striking out five.
